'Too much water’ – on the sidelines of Hurricane Harvey
[Guest post by Samrath Kaur in Katy, Texas–30 miles west of Houston] This week, Houston was hit by Hurricane Harvey. The previous all-time daily record for rainfall in the city, 8 inches, was doubled by Sunday's 16 inches, and the surrounding areas weren't spared from drastic changes in weather. Suburban life in my neighborhood found its sun-bleached monotony broken by days on end of heavy rain, but we avoided the brunt of the storm. Our relative safety did not stop my mother, kept half awake by the sharp beeping of occasional tornado warnings, from leaving bed early to make certain that I didn't walk outside and get swept away by the unspeakable power of ankle-deep water. Of course, my father woke up two hours later and exclaimed, "Ooh, cool! Do you want to go outside!?" much to my mother's consternation.
In the image at the top, a boy in shocking pink got off his bike, amazed by how high the water came to the sidewalk.
The less paranoid among us could be found out on the sidewalks with periodic breaks in the rain, tickled by our temporary relief from blazing Texan weather and fascinated with the freshness of the drizzle. The Internet warned me that natural disasters can result in strange animal behavior. So, under the protection of a golf umbrella, I undertook the task of recording what strange human behaviors I could find.
A man drives a golf cart full of young swimwear-clad boys through the flooded sidewalks. The kids had just gotten back on the vehicle after a good session of splashing around in the small pool covering the footpath.
By the grace of mobile data, these teenagers promptly posted a video of their shirtless friend cannon-balling into the floodwaters. I can only hope he washed up properly afterwards to fend off whatever bacteria was down there. The Internet recognition would probably not be worth the infection.
This woman kneels down to capture tree trunks emerging from the perhaps not-so-mysterious depths of the flooded neighborhood pond.
The bar for extraordinary occurrences is set low in my otherwise uneventful place. Rain that would be considered close to normal in other parts of the world served as the beck and call for smartphone cameras across this suburbia. I, too, am enraptured with the altered reality this weather offered... but I live with the luxury of a more modern drainage system than what some other local communities offer. My sympathy goes out to those whose losses were greater than ours.
