President’s Message
Greetings Urban Sketchers,Urban Sketchers was founded in 2007; that means we’re turning ten in 2017! There are many celebrations this year to mark the occasion. Here are some ways for you to get involved and join the fun.
Two hundred and sixty 10x10 classes will take place around the world in 2017. These classes are a great way for sketchers to learn new skills and build in-person community.A Day in the Life of an Urban Sketcher is another way to get to know someone new. Nine sketchers from six continents will be sharing a day in their life on the official USk Instagram and Twitter accounts. You can check out my Day in the Life of sketches HERE.
USk will be organizing a global 24 hour Sketchwalk on 11 November to mark our anniversary. Also, USk will be organizing a museum exhibit showcasing our ten year history with sketches from around the world. Look for more information in coming months.

Launch of Sketch Tour Portugal
In celebration of our 10th anniversary in 2017 Urban Sketchers, in partnership with the Tourism Office of Portugal (TP), is launching a new initiative called Sketch Tour Portugal.
Every month between May 2017 and May 2018, USk and the TP will promote Portugal through a sponsored sketching trip for a select Urban Sketcher to sketch a different region of Portugal on a theme specific to that region. The selected Urban Sketcher will be received by a Portuguese host sketcher from the region where they will sketch and they will work together as a team.
USk would like to congratulate Eduardo Bajzek from São Paulo, Rob Sketcherman from Hong Kong and Kasia Szybka from Poland who will be the first to take part in this program from May 11-14, 2017. The trio, along with their Portuguese host Fernanda Lamelas, will sketch in Fátima, Portugal, on the occasion of the centenary of the apparitions with the visit of Pope Francisco. Crowds of more than a million people are expected.
The sketchers will sketch a minimum of 6 drawings per day. The TP will use sketches made during the trip to promote Portugal in different events such as at fairs, in postcards, on social media, and at exhibitions. What a great opportunity! Happy sketching and best wishes to Rob, Eduardo, Kasia and Fernanda!

A Day in the Life of an Urban Sketcher
Urban Sketchers is celebrating its 10th Anniversary in 2017!“A Day in the Life of an Urban Sketcher” celebrates the lives of sketchers around the world and how they share work online. This monthly social media event will feature nine sketchers from six continents who will be sharing a day in their life in a USk Instagram and Twitter takeover. The featured sketcher will show their world, one drawing at a time by sharing approximately 6-10 posts on Instagram and Twitter during their day. These workshops are taught by our top instructors: great teachers such as Stephanie Bower, Richard Briggs, Suhita Shirodkar and more! Putting Workshops and Chapters Together

You’re a Regional Chapter Administrator and you’re excited about the idea of bringing a USk Instructor to your city to teach a USk workshop. How can this be arranged?
The first step is to contact our Education Director, Mario Linhares. Tell Mario which teacher you’re interested in and when you would like the workshop to take place. Mario will contact the instructor on your behalf and arrange to put you in touch with that instructor. If that instructor is not available, he will suggest someone else.
The workshop will be promoted on all our social media platforms: our website, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and even Youtube (if the instructor happens to have a video).
In exchange for promoting and endorsing your workshop, USk asks for a donation of 5% of the income up to the minimum of participants and 10% after that.
Sometimes it happens that the USk instructor arranges their own workshop. Sometimes the workshops fill up even before USk has had a chance to promote them.
Our instructors and Regional Chapter Administrators still donate to USk because they know that they have benefited from their association with Urban Sketchers. The workshop likely wouldn’t have happened without USk. Urban Sketchers has already invested in our instructors by promoting them, creating an audience for them and in some cases by even helping our instructors improve their skills or learn new ones.
Donating to USk is the best way to support the amazing community Gabi started in 2007, and to support our vision and mission to inspire more people to sketch daily.

People and Places, Life in Contrast with Suhita Shirodkar

Fresh, loose drawings of a moment in time with a lively sense of energy and spunk. That’s one way to describe Suhita Shirodkar’s colorful style, as her specialty is adding vitality to her sketches and teaching you to do the same in your unique style. Suhita, who works as a freelance illustrator and graphic designer, grew up in Bombay (now Mumbai), India and currently lives in San Jose, California with her family. She has taught workshops at the Brazil, Singapore and Manchester symposiums, as well as teaching locally in her area. Suhita developed her workshop, "People and Places, Life in Contrast" due to the recurring issues she was hearing about drawing people on location.
Suhita first discovered Urban Sketchers on Flickr in 2009 and became a correspondent in 2011. She’s a member of the San Francisco Bay Area Urban Sketchers regional chapter.

Some USk Workshops Qualify for AIA Continuing Ed Credit
By Lauren McVittieWhat does transformative waterfront design, the importance of the thermal envelope and an Urban Sketchers symposium have in common? They can all count for continuing education credits for American architects. To remain members of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), professionals must complete a number of credits each year. Workshops at Urban Sketchers symposiums that relate to the study of architecture count towards these credits.
Requirements vary by state but members must complete 12-18 hours of courses per year. Credits can be attained in a variety of formats, such as presentations, reading an article and taking a quiz or attending workshops. There are many pre-approved courses, and independent study related to the profession can be logged as continuing education as well. If a USk workshop teaches skills relevant to architecture, those hours can be submitted online.Some firms offer continuing education funds as a benefit to employees. If it relates to architecture, an employer may allow an employee to use the funds toward an Urban Sketchers workshop.

How to Design a USk Chapter Logo
If you’re the Admin of a newly-founded chapter, and are eager to design your regional logo, or are leading an existing chapter, and realize that your chapter logo might not be in line with the USk logo guidelines, you might find it helpful to read the USk LogoDesign Guide.
Regional Chapters are not required to design or use a logo but if they do use a logo it should be one that is in alignment with our Logo Design Guide. Our logo, created by Italian designer Franco Lancio, is our brand. It helps identify us as being part of the USk community. We’re really proud of it and we hope you are too!

Experiments with Dry Twig and Chinese Ink

Excitement is building for the upcoming 8th Urban Sketchers Symposium largely due to the very special opportunity to attend workshops with brilliant sketchers and teachers from around the globe such as KK. Ch’ng Kiah Kiean (aka KK), from Penang, Malaysia is noted for his beautiful, distinctive, energy filled drawings. He will be presenting one of these highly anticipated workshops: Sketching with Dry Twig and Chinese Ink.
While experimenting, he remembers, “I discovered the ink mid-tone surface can be achieved by rubbing the ink with a dry brush on watercolour paper. I named the method 'dry wash'. This makes the pure ink and twig drawing technique more complete.”
Kiah Kiean joined Urban Sketcher in 2009 as a blog correspondent and co-founded Urban Sketchers Penang in 2011. Nowadays the workshops he teaches are mostly sketching with dry twig and Chinese ink and the focus is on the lines in sketching. He teaches only about 4 to 5 workshops a year, both local and international, so we are very fortunate to have him presenting this year in Chicago.

Welcome to the Urban Sketchers community!
How many people are out there sketching with us? I’m astounded to tell you that there are over 118,000 Urban Sketchers affiliated with Regional Chapters around the world. There are at least 180 active chapters that we know about. We’re discovering and reaching out to new groups every month. Currently we have a backlog of 53 new potential chapters who are excited about joining Urban Sketchers.
Congratulations to all of us for being part of something big that is touching people around the world - one sketch at a time.

Happy 5th Birthday USk Chicago!

“What a fun day, what a great group!” Alex Zonis continued, “Thank you, everyone, for coming and celebrating our 5th birthday.”
In the first year, maybe three or four sketchers would attend monthly sketching events. Then, nine, maybe twelve. Now, fifty to seventy people attend events and they need to find venues and locations in Chicago that can accommodate this growing chapter.
Wes Douglas describes the monthly sketch events, “There's a transition that happens when urban sketchers are laughing and having fun to when we start sketching. Suddenly the faces get longer and we start looking down a lot.”
The five-year celebration was held at Architecture Artifacts, a sprawling warehouse of architectural salvage & furnishings which has something for everyone and let the time slip away.
“Great turnout at [Architectural Artifacts] today and fun seeing lots of terrific sketches. So much cool stuff to draw!” said Dave Wittekind.
Special thanks to Alex Zonis, USk Chicago Chapter administrator, who has been the keystone to the chapter’s success and bringing the community together. Additional support from Barbara McCafferty Weeks, supporting admin and team leader for the 10x10 Chicago classes; Joel Berman, international USk board member; Mary Jo Ernst, Andrew Banks, Wes Douglas and many other Chicagoans who are actively promoting urban sketching.

USk Miskolc, Capturing the City’s Cultural History

Inspired by attending an USk event in Budapest, Zsófi returned to Miskolc and got friends together to sketch in 2015. The group quickly grew and became an official USk chapter in December 2016. They’ve organized more than 30 events and 7-8 people regularly meeting up to sketch Miskolc’s sights and capture its industrial history. With members ranging in age from 16 to 72, it’s difficult to pin down an average age! And that might explain why they visit such a variety of locations.
“Mainly we draw outside, but we always look for new places,” says Laszlo, “from finding a tower to draw a bird’s eye view of the city, to sketching a puppet-show rehearsal, a temple café and even drawing in an extreme-sports hall erected on the site of an old factory. But the most interesting event so far was sketching at the Cinefest international art-film festival at night while wearing head lamps!”
In April 2016, they started a drawing marathon with events held on 10 different sites of cultural interest in Miskolc. “One of our founding members, Emese, had the idea,” says Laszlo, “to create a portrait of the city following the rules of urban sketching and then to offer an exhibition.” Anybody sketching at the events could display their drawings at a public showing during the Bartók international opera festival. “In the end,” says Laszlo, “we collected and exhibited over 100 drawings created on location – a great success!”
The next idea on the agenda for this active group is setting up a joint event with another chapter. “We’d like to draw together with the USk Budapest chapter, but we don’t know yet who will visit who!” _____________________________________________________________________

Are you a USk Workshop Groupie? Almost every weekend somewhere in the world a USk Instructor is surrounded by some very eager students. Maybe that was you! You listened carefully, took notes, studied the examples. You were perched on a teensy stool, strained to see from the back of the crowd or you were practically in the instructor’s pocket! And at the end of it you learned some great new skills, and met some wonderful, like-minded people in a fabulous setting.
