Conservative criticism of Pope surges in advance of Trump trip

A string of liberal moves by Pope Francis that have led Hollywood and Democrats to dub him the "cool pope" have distressed conservative American clergy so much that some are already looking to the next leader of the Catholic Church, according to a critical new book.
What's more, Vatican insiders describe the pope's management style as chaotic and that he is know to flip-flop from day to day.
"After only four years of his pontificate, Francis has emerged as one of the most political popes in the history of the church," wrote George Neumayr in his just released The Political Pope.
He added that Francis "is not only championing the radical political agenda of the global left but also subverting centuries-old Catholic teaching on faith and morals, evident in his unprecedented support for granting the sacrament of Holy Communion to the divorced and remarried and in his drive to dilute the church's moral and theological commitments."
The pope's endorsement of liberal policies, such as open-border immigration and global warming, could trip up the administration's hopes for a friendly visit with President Trump at the Vatican next week. Francis criticized Trump during the campaign over immigration, even questioning the president's Christianity.
Neumayr, who also authored the bestseller No Higher Power: Obama's War on Religious Freedom, gives voice to critics who believe Francis has veered too far left and has abandoned the policies and traditional Catholic teachings of the past two popes.
He notes that the pope appears open to every liberal thought, as evidenced with his most famous line, "Who am I to judge?"
Neumayr lists the liberal stars and publications that have embraced the pope, from former Vice President Al Gore, to Jane Fonda to Bill Maher, and the Rolling Stone.
Neumayr lists the liberal stars and publications that have embraced the pope, from former Vice President Al Gore, to Jane Fonda to Bill Maher, and the Rolling Stone.
Key to his book are interviews with critics, including an American priest who said that he carries around a list of dead popes to remind distressed parishioners that "bad popes don't live forever."
He also described a "buyer's remorse" with those who selected Francis as the 266th pope in 2013.
He quoted Vatican official who described the view of conservatives. "The more he talks, the worse it gets. Many bishops and cardinals are terrified to speak out, but they are in a state of apoplexy. The atmosphere is so politicized and skewed. The church is becoming unrecognizable."

Are legislators entitled to free food, free booze?

LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
Reforms passed in 2015 to block Nevada legislators from playing the gimme, gimme, gimme game are on the chopping block, courtesy of Assembly Democrats and Republicans.
Following the “leadership” of Sparks Democratic Assemblyman Skip Daly, the Assembly passed Assembly Bill 396 so they can resume taking free meals and gifts during a session and the rest of the year.
They want to return to the days of wine and roses for legislators, the days that Sen. Michael Roberson shut off when he was majority Republican leader in 2015.
Daly, a business manager for Laborers Local 169, wants the goodies back. With the exception of one absent assemblyman, all the assembly members followed Daly’s march toward allowing more freebies and less reporting of them.
On Friday, May19, another deadline for passing bills, we’ll see if the Senate Democrats and Republican vote to pass AB396. Or if the bill dies an ignominious death.
You can count on Robertson voting against it. But I’ll be watching to see who joins him and who doesn’t.
With a few exceptions, Nevada legislators historically want free meals paid for by lobbyists with generous expense accounts. It’s like an entitlement.
Between sessions, some want unlimited luxury food and beverage. I won’t name names because I can’t prove what I know, but some, not all, parlay their legislative jobs into nonstop free meals.
Between sessions, some want unlimited luxury food and beverage. I won’t name names because I can’t prove what I know, but some, not all, parlay their legislative jobs into nonstop free meals.
Roberson’s 2015 bill was strict and cut off the volcanic flow of freebies. It passed late in the session when legislators are ramming and jamming, and barely know what they are voting for. Legislators were banned from accepting anything from a lobbyist, and the ban was all year, not just when reporting was required before, after and during the session.
Trips had to be reported along with who paid for them.
Daly and the rest of the Assembly don’t want to report trips, which have tended to be lavish affairs and include family members. Educational trips to the Bahamas and London to learn about poker companies must be tough. Why should the public know about them?
His bill would allow lawmakers to accept up to $20 a day in food and beverage and $10 a day in gifts from one source.
Hypothetically, one lobbyist buys a lawmaker breakfast, another buys lunch, another buys dinner, another buys drinks, maybe a few others buy the same legislator a coffee or two.Pretty soon, it’s real money.
It also carves out more exceptions for what a “gift” is
Those guiding how state money is spent want looser reporting of the largesse they accept. All that talk about transparency is vacuous.
Roberson made it simple: Don’t take anything, not even a cup of coffee.
If you can’t manage your money to pay for your coffee and your meals, should you be responsible for managing the public’s money?
If you can’t manage your money to pay for your coffee and your meals, should you be responsible for managing the public’s money?
Is it simply impossible to meet with a lobbyist, discuss an issue and pay your own way?

Trey Gowdy Drops SHOCKING Comey Bombshell – Show Your Support
We should feel grateful that we have true conservatives like Trey Gowdy in office. We should also be upset that there also aren’t more HONEST conservative like him.
On Fox News, Gowdy came out and said that Comey did at least one thing right: wrestling the Hillary case from the DOJ. He also strongly implied that there was MORE collusion between Hillary’s campaign and the DOJ than the public even knows. Get them, Gowdy! (via The Daily Caller)
Trey Gowdy is one of the few good politicians in the Capitol. It is a shame he is surrounded by the swamp creatures that reside within it. The radical Left hates Gowdy, and that means he is our friend.
The corrupt Democrats and the RINOs panic when they see Gowdy. He is always on point and ready to call out any nonsense in the swamp. After Trump’s eight years, we should push for eight years of Trey Gowdy.
I’m surprised the radical Left hasn’t tried to defame Gowdy. He must be as clean as a whistle, which isn’t surprising, considering his public character. The Comey firing has silenced RINOs, but Trey Gowdy isn’t afraid to call out the Left.

Gowdy is an example of why we need more conservatives in office. We need to replace the RINOs with true conservatives. These career politicians are plaguing our government.
Meanwhile, the Obama-era holdovers — like Comey — and the corrupt Democrats are now struggling in their unending quest to undermine Trump, and we can blame the RINOs for that. The RINOs are just cowards.
The radical Left should be in full panic mode. With conservatives like Gowdy, we aren’t going to take any nonsense from the liberals. We need to drain that swamp, so thankfully, we have Trey Gowdy and Donald Trump one the job. It is a beautiful thing to watch true conservatives work, while the Left trips over itself. The mainstream media is even struggling to help the incompetent Left.
The RINOs cannot stand conservatives like Gowdy. They are afraid of honesty and the truth. The RINOs are not going to leave DC without a fight, and they will likely rely on the media’s lies to remain in place.
Donald Trump is going to drain the swamp, and he will help get more conservatives like Trey Gowdy into office.
Trump: Special counsel part of “greatest single witch hunt of a politician in American history!”
Donald Trump returned to morning Twitter today, after a brief respite on Wednesday, and to his morning-Twitter style. In doing so, he yet again contradicted his own White House communication strategy, contradicting the anodyne statement that went out after the appointment of Robert Mueller as special counsel for the Russian-interference probe. This morning, he complained of being the target of “the greatest single witch hunt of a politician in American history!”
This is the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!
With all of the illegal acts that took place in the Clinton campaign & Obama Administration, there was never a special counsel appointed!
Andrew Johnson, Richard Nixon, and definitely Bill Clinton might disagree on that last point, worthily or not. (For that matter, so might Al Smith.) As for the peccadilloes of Hillary Clinton, Trump repeatedly promised during the election to have a special counsel appointed to review that case. He certainly could ask Jeff Sessions, who was also a critic of the way James Comey handled the Clinton e-mail investigation, to appoint a special counsel now.
Contrast this with the carefully crafted response that came out of the White House last night despite the short notice on Mueller’s appointment, which seemed aimed at making sure that it projected confidence from Trump that this would exonerate him fully:
According to the senior official with knowledge of the situation, Trump explained how the administration should respond and told his aides that it was an opportunity to focus on their agenda. The advisers then drafted a statement which was refined by the president before it was released.
It read, in part, “As I have stated many times, a thorough investigation will confirm what we already know — there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity. I look forward to this matter concluding quickly.”
The official indicated that, in some ways, the staff feels united by Mueller’s appointment and that the inquiry allows for an easier response to questions about Russia — staff can simply comment that it is under investigation.
That was the smart move — take the news with cool aplomb, and use the opening to refocus on the legislative agenda, which the last two weeks of breaking-news bombs has stuck on the side rails. Make it look like this would work to Trump’s advantage, and even better, keep him from making it look like the move is aimed at the White House at all, let alone the Oval Office. Of all the people deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein could have chosen for special counsel, Mueller was probably the best — experienced and non-partisan, not a grandstander or a self-promoter, and with no political ambitions that could make this investigation into a platform for a future run for office. Assuming Mueller’s investigation clears Trump, it would be a gold-plated exoneration, making this a great opportunity for the administration … as long as it has nothing to hide.
Instead, that comms strategy went out the window, or at least out the app this morning. In its place is a wildly exaggerated claim of victimhood that will perhaps galvanize his base, but make everyone else wonder what has Trump so worried. It’s yet another reminder that when it comes to strategic communications, Trump is often his own worst enemy, especially on Twitter.
That’s not to say that Rosenstein’s decision was the optimal choice, or that Trump had to personally endorse it, either. All he had to do was not talk about it. As Andrew McCarthy wrote yesterday, it may not be the wisest choice, but it’s a fait accompli now, and Mueller gives the White House reason to at least keep quiet about it:
The FBI (and other intelligence agencies) have been investigating the Russia counterintelligence matter for nearly a year, and a great deal of work has already been done on it. I imagine there is a chance it could be wrapped up within a few months — Mueller is a quick study and a hard worker, it won’t take him long to get up to speed.
What can really slow these investigations down is the prosecution of ancillary criminal cases. If there are none, things can be wrapped up in short order. But if people are indicted, it could go on for years. Mueller is not a Lawrence Walsh type. He will not want to make a career out of this. At the same time, if serious criminal wrongdoing is uncovered, he won’t turn a blind eye. …
I remain a skeptic of special prosecutors or special counsels. Democrats are so Trump-deranged that I suspect, despite Mueller’s solid reputation, they will claim the fix is in if impeachment does not appear to be on the horizon in short order. But most people will give Mueller a chance. And he deserves that.
He deserves it from Trump, too, before implying that Mueller is any part of a witch hunt.
Update: Originally, the second tweet went out just a few minutes before the first, but with the word “counsel” misspelled. Trump later deleted the original tweet and retweeted it with the word spelled correctly.
California Gov: You people not liking massive tax hikes are “freeloaders”
You may recall that on Monday we discussed some discontent among the peasants in California who were enraged over a new package of gasoline taxes and automobile licensing fees which recently went into effect. So unhappy were the voters that an initiative was started to recall one of their Democratic legislators and another measure was put forward for a referendum vote which would repeal the expensive new measures.
Well, that news isn’t sitting well with Governor Jerry Brown. He was quickly out on the trail defending Josh Newman (the Assembly member facing the recall) and insisting that good government costs money. (Orange County Register)
A day after signature gathering began to recall a Fullerton legislator for supporting new transportation taxes, Gov. Jerry Brown offered an impassioned defense of the road-improvement plan and of the Democratic state senator under attack.
Brown was also dismissive of efforts by a Republican assemblyman from Huntington Beach to qualify a ballot measure that could reverse the Democrat-backed tax plan.
“Roads require money to fix,” Brown said during a Friday visit to Orange County. “Republicans say there’s a magic source of money — it doesn’t exist. … You want to borrow money and pay double? Or do nothing? Or take money from universities?”
At first glance it looked as if Brown was mostly going after the California Republicans who opposed the taxes in the first place, but that didn’t last for long. As reported by our colleague Kira Davis at Redstate, the Governor had some harsh words for the voters as well. You don’t want to pay up? Stop being a bunch of freeloaders.
In response to the outrage of taxpayers who were blindsided by the massive increase and those supporting the recall of Newman, Brown took a less than sympathetic tone.
“The freeloaders — I’ve had enough of them,” Brown said, adding that the approved tax and fee hikes bring those charges to the level they were 30 years ago if adjusted for inflation. “They have a president that doesn’t tell the truth and they’re following suit.”
Newman will have campaign resources to prevail in a recall should the measure qualify for the ballot, Brown said.
“He’ll have whatever he needs,” he said.
Congratulations, California. You keep electing these same Democrats over and over again and then you act surprised when they make you one of the most heavily taxed populations in the country. And when you finally raise your voices to protest the out of control taxation and spending, the state party’s titular leader is brazen enough to come straight out and tell you what he really thinks of you. Democratic governance is big business and you’re responsible for footing the bill for it. If you don’t like it you’re obviously a bunch of freeloading cheapskates.
How much more of this are you going to put up with? I’m not entirely without sympathy, but at this point California’s voters appear to be in the political equivalent of an abusive relationship. The Democrats continue to beat you up and then insult and berate you if you dare to complain about it. It’s time to break the cycle of abuse and get yourself a new paramour who treats you right. Nobody else can save you unless you’re willing to take the first steps to help yourselves.
Chuck Schumer Made A Demand And It Instantly Turned Into A Mistake
Chuck Schumer is all-in on destroying the Trump Presidency.
And he thinks he found a weak spot.
So he issued an outrageous demand to try and sabotage Trump with scandal.
Democrats – and their allies in the so-called “mainstream” media – are promoting the story that Trump fired FBI Director Jim Comey to cover up alleged ties to Russia.
There is no evidence to back up this fake news conspiracy theory, but Democrats have seized on it to push their demand for a special prosecutor.
Now Chuck Schumer is demanding no replacement for Comey be confirmed until an independent counsel is appointed.
CNN reports:
“SENATE MINORITY LEADER CHUCK SCHUMER SAID SUNDAY THAT THE SENATE SHOULD REFUSE TO CONFIRM A NEW FBI DIRECTOR UNTIL THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE APPOINTS A SPECIAL COUNSEL TO LEAD A PROBE INTO ALLEGATIONS OF COLLUSION BETWEEN THE TRUMP CAMPAIGN AND RUSSIA.
“I THINK THERE ARE A LOT OF DEMOCRATS WHO FEEL THAT WAY,” SCHUMER SAID ON CNN’S “STATE OF THE UNION.” “WE’LL HAVE TO DISCUSS IT AS A CAUCUS, BUT I WOULD SUPPORT THAT MOVE.”
VIRGINIA SEN. MARK WARNER, THE TOP DEMOCRAT ON THE SENATE INTELLIGENCE COMMITTEE, PROPOSED THE IDEA AFTER PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP FIRED FBI DIRECTOR JAMES COMEY LAST WEEK.
TRUMP HAS YET TO NAME HIS CHOICE TO REPLACE COMEY, FOR WHICH INTERVIEWS HAVE TAKEN PLACE THIS WEEKEND, AND THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT THUS FAR HAS DECLINED TO APPOINT A SPECIAL PROSECUTOR. REPUBLICANS LEADING CONGRESS HAVE ALSO DECLINED TO COMPEL A SPECIAL PROSECUTOR OR CREATE AN INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATIVE COMMISSION.”

But Democrats have little recourse to backup their demands.
Schumer admitted as much.
CNN reports:
“ACKNOWLEDGING DEMOCRATS’ LIMITED INFLUENCE IN CONGRESS, SCHUMER TOLD ANCHOR JAKE TAPPER, “THE KEY HERE, OF COURSE, IS GETTING SOME OF OUR REPUBLICAN COLLEAGUES TO JOIN US.”
“ACKNOWLEDGING DEMOCRATS’ LIMITED INFLUENCE IN CONGRESS, SCHUMER TOLD ANCHOR JAKE TAPPER, “THE KEY HERE, OF COURSE, IS GETTING SOME OF OUR REPUBLICAN COLLEAGUES TO JOIN US.”
Chuck Schumer worked with Harry Reid to change Senate rules in 2013 to allow for appointments except Supreme Court nominees to be confirmed with just 51 votes.
The only chance for Democrats to force the administration to appoint a special prosecutor would be if foolish Republicans joined the Democrats in blocking Trump’s pick to head the FBI.

Experts question why there is even a need for a special prosecutor.
To date, no one has been accused of a crime.
George Washington Law Professor Jonathan Turley questioned the need for an independent counsel on ‘Morning Joe’.
Breitbart reports:
“FOR WEEKS I’VE QUESTIONED THE NEED FOR SPECIAL COUNSEL BECAUSE HONESTLY I STILL DON’T SEE THE UNDERLYING CRIME HERE,” TURLEY SAID. “YOU KNOW, WHEN WE TALK ABOUT THE RUSSIAN INFLUENCE AND COLLUSION, THERE’S NOT ANY EVIDENCE I’VE SEEN OF COLLUSION BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, NO ONE HAS ARTICULATED A MAJOR CRIME, AS OPPOSED TO THE REPORTING AND REGISTRATION VIOLATIONS OF PEOPLE LIKE FLYNN, WHICH USUALLY WOULDN’T WARRANT A SPECIAL COUNSEL. BUT THAT’S THE GREAT MYSTERY HERE.”

BUT THAT’S THE GREAT MYSTERY HERE.”
“YOU KNOW, WITH WATERGATE THAT PEOPLE HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT, THERE WAS A SERIOUS CRIME THAT BEGAN THAT LED TO THE COVER-UP,” HE CONTINUED. “HERE YOU SEEM TO HAVE A COVER-UP WITHOUT A CRIME. THAT’S WHAT’S SO BIZARRE ABOUT THE CONDUCT OF THE WHITE HOUSE. IT SEEMS TO BE A COVER-UP IN SEARCH OF A CRIME. THE PROBLEM WITH THE SPECIAL COUNSEL IS WHAT WILL THE SPECIAL COUNSEL INVESTIGATE? BUT HAVING SAID THAT, AFTER THEY FIRED COMEY, MY VIEW IS THAT IT’S CHANGED, THAT WE DO NEED AN INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION SIMPLY BECAUSE THE WHITE HOUSE HAS CREATED A CREDIBILITY PROBLEM. AND LOTS OF AMERICANS BELIEVE THAT THERE IS AN EFFORT HERE TO OBSTRUCT THE INVESTIGATION.”
Democrats are insisting on an independent prosecutor because those investigations turn into politically embarrassing fishing expeditions that create suspicion around an administration.
They last for years and end with headlines about prosecutions for crimes that were not the original target of the investigation.
Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald launched an investigation which hovered over the Bush administration for years after columnist Bob Novak published Valerie Plame’s name.
His sources were accused of outing a CIA agent – which didn’t happen – but administration official Scooter Libby was convicted of lying about a meeting.
A special prosecutor is the last card the Democrats have to play in this fake news Russia story.
We will keep you updated on any new developments in this story.
Chaffetz Expected To Announce He’s Leaving Congress Early
"... it is time."
By Andrew Kerr
Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, is expected to announce Thursday he will resign from Congress by the end of June, according to multiple reports.
Chaffetz, the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, announced in April he would not run for reelection in 2018, saying that after “more than 1,500 nights away from my home, it is time.”

The congressman told Politico last month he had already begun searching for employment outside of Congress.
Several sources close to Chaffetz say he’s been in talks with Fox News.
Those sources say he could possibly accept a “substantial role” at the cable news network as early as July.
Chaffetz’s departure from Congress will ignite a race among House Republicans to replace him as chairman of the influential House Oversight Committee.
Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, the third-ranking congressman on the committee, is rumored to make a run for chairmanship after losing to Chaffetz in 2014.
The chairman of the Freedom Caucus, Mark Meadows, R-N.C., told The Hill on Thursday that Jordan would be a great selection to replace Chaffetz.
“Jim Jordan probably has meritoriously served and would deserve it based on merit,” Meadows said.
Most of the longest-serving Republican members of the committee are also members of the Freedom Caucus, a conservative branch of the Republican party that often clashes with the more-moderate GOP leadership.
The House Steering Committee, which is in charge of handing out committee assignments, is primarily controlled by the upper echelons of House GOP leadership.
Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., a rising star in the Republican party, was pitched by one member of the Steering Committee as a potential replacement for Chaffetz, despite the fact Gowdy is currently the eighth most senior member of the House Oversight Committee.
