Tamed into Topiary
[ Suhita Shirodkar in San Jose] I’m always fascinated by the topiary I see in my neighborhood. Trees sheared and shaped into globes and cubes, flat topped bushes, and poodle-like shrubs. I thought I’d record a few in an accordion-book.
And here's what those pages look like, close up.
Perfectly round bushes and tall graveyard trees.
Dr. Seuss could have imagined these trees.
Flat topped bushes.
Caught in the act! Here are the shearers with their heavy equipment.
Our local gas station favors mushroom-shaped trees.
Before they turned into poodles, they were olive trees.
There's something about super-stark architectural lines that makes the topiary (almost) make sense in this last scene.
It was a interesting little project, done over a couple of days, as I drove through my neighborhood on my everyday chores. And it made me wonder about our need to take what is wild, untamed and beautiful and turn it into something boxy, standardized and almost unrecognizable.
