Guest in the vintage fire department
[By Nina Johansson in Stockholm] I have had the opportunity to hang out for a bit with a lovely group of vintage car enthusiasts near Stockholm. These guys have a big place in their hearts for their old firetrucks (and an ambulance, from the times when those were white with a red cross) and spend a lot of time and effort to keep these old gems alive.I sort of knew where their garage was, and I have been curious to see it from the inside, but it took a long time before I finally managed to pop in while they were actually there working. When I did, I was immediately welcomed, given a cup of coffee and shown around, and encouraged to come drawing whenever I want. It is an incredible place to draw, with so much interesting stuff going on everywhere. It´s not just the vehicles, it´s all those little signs of work happening everywhere, tools in use, boxes and crates with spare parts, and the sounds of hammering and conversations about the next move to solve a technical problem.
When it was time for the yearly vintage car race and meetup in Stockholm, Gärdesloppet, by the end of May, I was invited to come along.
It is an incredibly nice and special experience to ride in an open firetruck from 1931 along the E4 highway. Even more so when the driver and his companion are dressed to match the car. Time travel! And it seems like everyone loves firetrucks. In the vintage car parade through the city, people came up to the fire trucks at every red light, to talk to the firemen and ask about the cars. Some just walked up close to touch a fender or check out the old Scania logo on the cooler.
The firetrucks were surrounded by curious people at the car exhibition, and lots of kids were excited to try out sitting at the steering wheel when they got the chance. From the driver´s point of view, everything has a function in these trucks, I guess the curved swoosh design and digital displays of modern car dashboards were not even thought of in 1931. Everything is there for a reason. And how about those turn signals? (The red drop shaped objects on either side of the windshield.) I wish I could have animated them for you, with their orange arms waving up and down when in use.
After a long day in the sun, drawing, talking to people, and having a picnic with the Stockholm urban sketchers, a few of us hitched a ride back to the garage with the firetrucks. All tired but happy, and with a lot less red paint left in our watercolour palettes.
