Released 6/6/2017
New York Times bestselling author A. J. Hartley returns to his intriguing, 19th-century South African-inspired fantasy world in another adrenaline-pounding adventure
Once a steeplejack, Anglet Sutonga is used to scaling the heights of Bar-Selehm. Nowadays she assists politician Josiah Willinghouse behind the scenes of Parliament. The latest threat to the city-state: Government plans for a secret weapon are stolen and feared to be sold to the rival nation of Grappoli. The investigation leads right to the doorsteps of Elitus, one of the most exclusive social clubs in the city. In order to catch the thief, Ang must pretend to be a foreign princess and infiltrate Elitus. But Ang is far from royal material, so Willinghouse enlists help from the exacting Madam Nahreem.
Yet Ang has other things on her mind. Refugees are trickling into the city, fleeing Grappoli-fueled conflicts in the north. A demagogue in Parliament is proposing extreme measures to get rid of them, and she soon discovers that one theft could spark a conflagration of conspiracy that threatens the most vulnerable of Bar-Selehm. Unless she can stop it.
Author Question: What is your favorite thing about Firebrand?
I think what I love about this series is that it's the kind of fantasy that feels absolutely rooted in the real world, both in history and in the issues and ideas of today. That was true to a certain extent of STEEPLEJACK, then first book in the series, but as I became more and more comfortable with the world of the books, it became easier to make that link to reality stronger, more urgent and insistent. I like the kind of fantasy that transports the reader to a completely foreign place, offering an escape from the ordinary reality, but ultimately I've always preferred the kind of fantasy that feels like looking back at the real world through a distorting lens. FIREBRAND is a story about the heroine's personal growth, and it reads like an adventure, but it's also a story about racism and immigration, social injustice and the lengths people go to stand up for what is right. I don't think readers will have to look far to see connections to our own world.
That said, I also love how much Ang has already grown since book 1, when she was just learning to use her skills for the good of the city she loves. Then she was still shy, hesitant, easily cowed by authority because of her upbringing and status in the world. In FIREBRAND she gets the opportunity to move under cover into some very different--and high class--parts of the city, and this demands a confidence and self-assertion from her that we haven't seen before. It lets her be smart and funny as well as tough, allowing her to grow as a person even as she stands up for the values she holds dear. It's nice when a character starts to really live, so that the author just has to get out of the way and let her be who she wants to :)

Author Question: What is your favorite thing about Follow Me Back?
Honestly? My favorite thing about FOLLOW ME BACK is the feedback. Ever since the advance review copies started circulating, I've enjoyed a constant stream of messages from readers who turned the final page and immediately felt compelled to write me. (Frequently in all caps. Frequently screaming something along the lines of: "WHAT DID YOU JUST DO????") The plot twists in this book have been known to elicit a passionate response.
I might differ from some authors in this regard. My Twitter DMs are always open, and I spend time every day interacting with my readers. FOLLOW ME BACK would never have been written without an online community egging me on. I wrote the first draft as a web serial on a story-sharing site called Wattpad. Within minutes of posting each new chapter, I received a flood of comments in response. Those readers deserve all the credit (or possibly all the blame) for the twists, hooks, and cliffhangers galore. The book went through many rounds of revision since that early draft, and I can't wait for a fresh batch of victims to discover it in print. So please, if you're a new reader, don't hesitate to reach out. I'll be over here on Twitter checking my DMs... and listening to the screams.

Author Question: What is your favorite thing about Song of the Current?
My favorite thing about SONG OF THE CURRENT is that it’s a mashup of everything I loved when I was growing up—sailing, fantasy books, old songs and legends. I still grin thinking about how crazy it is that I somehow managed to get a real publisher to buy my weird super-nautical adventure story. But I also love the banter between the main character, Caro, and the spoiled boy she’s forced to team up with. He’s a total fish out of water, which is one of my favorite tropes, and she’s a girl who doesn’t put up with any nonsense. It was a really fun dynamic to write.

Before the war, Eden’s life was easy—air conditioning, ice cream, long days at the beach. Then the revolution happened, and everything changed.
Now a powerful group called the Wolfpack controls the earth and its resources. Eden has lost everything to them. They killed her family and her friends, destroyed her home, and imprisoned her. But Eden refuses to die by their hands. She knows the coordinates to the only neutral ground left in the world, a place called Sanctuary Island, and she is desperate to escape to its shores.
Eden finally reaches the island and meets others resistant to the Wolves—but the solace is short-lived when one of Eden’s new friends goes missing. Braving the jungle in search of their lost ally, they quickly discover Sanctuary is filled with lethal traps and an enemy they never expected.
This island might be deadlier than the world Eden left behind, but surviving it is the only thing that stands between her and freedom.
Author Question: What is your favorite thing about The Sandcastle Empire?
Ooh, tough (but great) question! In THE SANDCASTLE EMPIRE, the main action takes place during a future global war and centers around four girls who escape imprisonment in search of Sanctuary Island, which is rumored to be the world’s last remaining neutral territory. There are super short flashback chapters sprinkled all throughout, though, to give glimpses into main character Eden’s life before the war—I loved writing those, and for the most part, they stayed miraculously intact throughout the entire drafting/revision process!

What is a hero? Paige Nolan knows.
Edward Raynes, the young man who exposed America’s unconstitutional spying techniques, is a hero, even if half the dum-dums in the country think he’s a traitor. Or her parents, journalists who were captured by terrorists while telling stories of the endangered and oppressed. They were heroes, too. Were. . . or are—no one has ever told Paige if they’re still alive, or dead.
Not heroes? Anyone in the government who abandoned her parents, letting them rot somewhere halfway across the world. And certainly not Paige herself, who despite her fluency in five languages and mastery of several obscure martial arts (thanks, Mom!) could do nothing to save them.
Couldn’t, that is, until she’s approached by Madden Carter, an undercover operative who gives her a mission—fly to Russia, find Raynes, and discover what other government secrets he’s stockpiled. In exchange, he’ll reopen the case on her missing parents. She’s given a code name and a cover as a foreign exchange student.
Who is a hero? Not Paige Nolan, but maybe, just maybe, Liberty is.

Fifteen-year-old Amadou counts the things that matter. For two years what has mattered are the number of cacao pods he and his younger brother, Seydou, can chop down in a day. Years ago, Rachel had a crush on Henry Jones. The day before she moved away, she tucked a love letter into his favorite book in his family’s bookshop. She waited. But Henry never came.
Now Rachel has returned to the city—and to the bookshop—to work alongside the boy she’d rather not see, if at all possible, for the rest of her life. But Rachel needs the distraction. Her brother drowned months ago, and she can’t feel anything anymore.
As Henry and Rachel work side by side—surrounded by books, watching love stories unfold, exchanging letters between the pages—they find hope in each other. Because life may be uncontrollable, even unbearable sometimes. But it’s possible that words, and love, and second chances are enough.
