Old signs, lost stories

[Suhita Shirodkar in San Jose] I've been sketching old signs around my city for a while. And with the rain gone (we had a long spell of rain this year), I'm really pushing to work through a list of signs I want to sketch.

Some signs have fabulous stories I can research at our local archives, History San Jose. But sometimes my favorites are the most beaten up ones with the message missing and no trace of history of what they said. Some just have great shapes and textures. All of them are fun to draw.

With a project I've worked on for this long (I've worked on this, on and off, for a few years), the challenge s to not just revert to the exact same style and medium to capture every sign, but to respond to the nature of the sign, the day, the scene and then choose how to best convey that.

I'm learning so much about the history of the city as I work on this project. As a first generation immigrant who moved to the country after all these signs came into existence, the signs are a way for me to unearth for myself the history of San Jose before this was Silicon Valley.

I have to say, liquor store signs are my favorite. They have the most oomph! Sketching many of these signs means going into neighborhoods I haven't been to before. I like that, I get to see so many different facets of San Jose.

Since I've started sketching these signs, many have disappeared, replaced by housing and malls.

There's an initiative to try and save some of our historic signs in a park open to the public. I'm hoping that sketching and sharing these signs raises awareness and an appreciation for them in some small way.

Urban Sketching is about showing your world, one sketch at a time. And that's fantastic. But almost always, the one that gets to look most deeply, to see my everyday surroundings in amazing new ways, is me. That's the power of urban sketching.
You can see lots more sketches of these signs and read their stories on this site.
