On Waterloo Bridge
[By James Hobbs in London.] London's bridges have seen some tragic events in recent days, a point I had time to dwell on waiting in the wind and rain at a bus stop on Waterloo Bridge last night. From the northbound bus stop at its southern end the scene is mainly of the brutalist lines of the National Theatre and the South Bank TV studio tower, with the tops of St Paul's Cathedral and the Cheesegrater peeking over the concrete. The drawing suffered a bit of rain damage, and I didn't feel encouraged to linger. The bridge was quiet, mainly because of the heavy rain, and also because of a gathering down by Tower Bridge led by our popular mayor, Sadiq Khan, to remember those affected by the London Bridge and Borough Market attacks. We carry on, because that's all we can do, and it's what the people of every city around the world hit by such tragedies do. As our friends in Manchester have shown so well, these atrocities can strengthen and unite us.
