Postcards From Chicago: #7 Dearborn Station

by Wes Douglas, Urban Sketchers Chicago

As we look forward to the 8th International Symposium, I will continue to take you on a virtual tour of my favorite views of Chicago which I have named "Postcards from Chicago." Each week I will post a different scene of Chicago – some may be familiar to you and some may be less familiar – and by the time I am done it should be time for the Symposium. To help me illustrate the popularity of this week's architecture, the Dearborn Station (also referred to as Polk Street Station), I am happy to feature the work of Chicago Urban Sketcher Brian Wright.

The Dearborn Station was the oldest of the six inter-city train stations serving downtown Chicago, Illinois. The Romanesque Revival structure, designed by Cyrus L. W. Eidlitz, opened May 8, 1885 at a cost of $400 to $500 thousand (equivalent to $10.7 to $13.3 million in 2017). The three-story building's exterior walls and twelve-story clock tower were composed of pink granite and red pressed brick topped by a number of steeply-pitched roofs. Modifications to the structure following a fire in 1922 included eliminating the original pitched roof profile. Behind the head house were the train platforms, shielded by a large train shed. Inside the station were ticket counters, waiting rooms, and the Fred Harvey Company restaurants.
For those of you who are making the trip to Chicago for the 8th International Symposium, this building is only a couple of blocks away from the Symposium Hub. When you have a break between workshops, you can grab a bite to eat at Bar Louie http://ift.tt/29UKrma.
