Travels through Japan: Kyushu and the Inland Sea
[Guest post by Lynda Gray in Japan] Karatsu is on the northwestern tip of Kyushu, the most southerly of the large islands in Japan. It faces the Genkai Sea and South Korea and has a beautiful coastline dotted with islands. With over 70 pottery studios in the area, we spent some time tuning in to subtle differences in pot-shapes and glazes before choosing that one small but special piece to bring home.Finding some ‘flow’ in the concertina should have been easy ; the sweep of Karatsu Bay was wonderful. Landscape seems to need a more painterly approach than an urban-scape though and I began to think a textured paper rather than my smooth watercolour surface might have been better here, but then I would have wanted my proper watercolour brushes as well, and maybe my easel, and actually maybe a whiter paper would have been better too - and so it goes on in my head!
In contrast the hotel window looked onto an urban landscape of rooftops and the wiring that weaves a distinctive web above and across all of Japan’s towns. The wiring seems something of a gift - a way of stitching together a sketch.
We caught the bus to Yobuko, a small fishing town where we visited the Nakao Mansion Museum with its beautiful blue stamps, and learned about a whaling company that had made its fortune in the Edo era.
Leaving Kyushu we headed up the Inland Sea with a short visit to Hiroshima, a moving place with its tragic past. Then on to Miyajima and happy to be admiring the wonderful shrine gate of Itsukushima and getting a final blast of red into what had turned into a very blue concertina.
