Day 3: A view, protests and colorful shirts

[By Béliza Mendes, Symposium Correspondent in Chicago, USA]

The day started for me on top of the Kemper building with Nina Johansson's workshop, 'Make room for a view'. It was the perfect setting to practise sketching panoramic views over the city. For the first exercise, participants had to make quick sketches of the view. 'I want at least 3 drawings in 6 minutes! I heard Nina declare.

I left the amazing sky lounge in search for Delphine Priollaud's workshop near the Chicago Theater, but I failed to find the group. After searching for half an hour, I decided to treat myself to a quick sketch of a small protest taking place opposite of the Chicago Theater. How could I resist a protest composed of hot dogs and mustard containers?

The morning ended with a visit to José Louro's workshop, 'Draw less, show more'. I joined the group for an exercise in using negative space. José, very philosophical, dispensed some encouraging words to the group. 'An unfinished work is not a work that is not done!'was one of his gems.

After a quick lunch, I joined Renato Palmuti for his workshop, 'Watercolor techniques for a fast cityscape'. The group was bravely enduring the scorching sun, each person I their own way, and it was worth it. 'We are not here to suffer', were his reassuring words to the ladies around him while demonstrating what he expected of them. A master with watercolor, Renato made it seem so easy that I tried to apply his technique in layers to my sketch of the group (see first sketch).

Next stop, Barnes and Noble, where Simone Ridyard was teaching perspective to a group of very attentive sketchers in her workshop called 'An urban sketcher's guide to figuring out perspective in Chicago!'

Finally, I caught up with João Catarino's workshop, 'Chicago reflex hunters', just in time for show and tell. I saw some very impressive results, and judging by João's enthusiasm, so did he.

Time to go back to the Hub, where Rita Sabler and Hugo Costa were giving their lectures. I knew that my fellow correspondents had those covered, so I couldn't resist catching them in the act. It had to be done at least once! Wes, so intensely focused on the task that he barely moved, and Vincent, half hidden and constantly exchanging pencils when sketching.

Dinner was the occasion for one last sketch, the meeting of Josiah and Lapin, n
ew old friends who already admired each other online and had just met. Judging by their fashion sense, one can only say that those two were meant to be friends!
