Cornered in Naples
by Fred Lynch in Napoli, ItalyThis July I visited Naples for the first time and stayed in the Spanish Quarter. It was a shock to my senses. Vespas darted dangerously up and down the crowded, narrow lanes. Tall tattered apartment buildings with crowded balconies were connected by hoards of hanging laundry. People passed things up and down the sides with buckets and baskets hung from rope. The streets were cluttered with venders of fish, fruits and vegetables and home goods. There were pizza shops and bars galore. The neighborhood was a riot of colors, noises and smells. It was both exciting and overwhelming for this small-town guy from America.
I ducked into a tight space between parked cars to catch this small slice of the neighborhood. However, looking back, it's so deceiving - failing to show all the activity around me, even in my crevice. For instance, as I drew, a truck pulled up just to my right, blocking traffic on the side street. Two men jumped out of the truck and swiftly put on large red coats. They then hauled, I think, five huge pigs out of back to the butcher shop next door. Each of the pigs was cut in half from head to toe.
