How Art makes the city of Chicago vibrate!

[by Marion Rivolier from Paris, France]

I was lucky to be an instructor for the 8th Urban Sketchers Symposium in Chicago in July. As a Parisian, I am not comfortable with the incredible scale of American cities. When I arrived in Chicago, I was so surprised by the height of the skyscrapers that I thought I couldn’t paint anything… I had to tame the scale and the density of the buildings.
So I decided to change the way I paint the city; I wanted to focus on the incredible sculptures which transform our perception of the urban landscape. My first one was “The Red Flamingo” by Alexander Calder at the corner of Adams St. and Dearborn St. The curves and movement of the sculpture play with the order and rhythm of the buildings’ windows. The morning light creates some sweet reflections on the different materials of the facades.

I was impressed by the Jay Pritzker Pavilion by Franck Gehry in Millenium Park. This architecture is an explosion of steel, wood and stainless steel, like an open heart to share music and art. In this watercolor, I focused on the huge structures. First I tried to paint in negative space (without preliminary pencil drawing): I kept the structures in the white of the paper. I wanted to create a dialogue between the curves and the colors of buildings in the background. The most important thing in this drawing is the vibration and the movement of the space.

When you visit Chicago and you are a sketcher, a must-see is “the Bean”, Anish Kapoor’s amazing sculpture not too far from the Pritzker Pavilion. You can’t imagine his scale! So many difficulties to overcome in a unique subject : the oval shape, the material of the mirror, the deformation of the reflection, the incredible complexity of the reflection, etc.
I wanted to create a dialogue between the reflection and the reflected, but keeping my focus on the reflection; for that, I used warm and cool colors and values to create depth in my watercolor. Also, I wanted to express the crowd like a moving shape, an army of ants!

During the Symposium, you have the good fortune to meet some sketchers you admire : on the left, I was painting Eduardo Bajzek during his pencils demonstration; amazing work playing with white and black shapes to create values and depth. On the right, I met Uma Kelkar for the first time. I like her approach with watercolor, free and colorful! It was great to share sketching ideas with them.
Overall, this Symposium was incredible!
Thank you to Alex and the Chicago team for your huge work! Thank you also to the Urban Sketchers board for making this adventure so intense; and thank you to the participants who were so interested and motivated. They were absolutely not afraid of going out of their comfort zone! It was amazing to work with you!
I hope to meet you again in Porto next year!
