Urban Sketchers Announces Microsoft Surface + Mental Canvas

as Sponsors for 2017 Symposium

Urban Sketchers is grateful for the generous support of Microsoft Surface + Mental Canvas at the 8th International Urban Sketchers Symposium in Chicago from 26 -29 July 2017. 

Drawing in a new dimension™ Mental Canvas™ is a software company that is developing a new class of graphical-media-design system that lies between today's 2D digital draw-and-paint systems and 3D computer-aided design systems, combining the ease and fluidity of sketching with expansive 3D capabilities. Surface and Mental Canvas liberate sketching from the limitations of pen and paper, making it so easy to change perspective, add depth, tour a scene, incorporate imagery, and be highly interactive with its viewers in the digital age.

At the Urban Immersion Workshop that was taught by Urban Sketchers faculty Veronica Lawlor, participants saw the Surface and Mental Canvas in action.

It inspired analog sketching with a digital tool that enhanced various ways of representing a scene, growing a sketch and viewing it at multiple planes at the same time. It made sketching on paper more expansive, dynamic and a highly multi-dimensional experience as it extended the boundaries of how a sketch is usually perceived and drawn.

Here are some sketches and participants of her workshop.

 

During the Symposium, 570 sketchers from 34 countries got a chance to win a Microsoft Surface + Mental Canvas at the very much-awaited raffle. The lucky winner happily bagged the prize!

Earlier this year, Veronica creating live drawing with Mental Canvas was also featured at the well-received Surface launch events in Shanghai and Tokyo.
