We all know and love SpongeBob SquarePants’s original theme song and opening sequence - it's a big part of the hit Nickelodeon show’s long-lasting success. They’re catchy, fun, and explain the basic premise of the show every episode.
The iconic opening originally aired during the first episode of SpongeBob SquarePants in May 1999, and was recently digitally remastered in HD.
Last night, US-based animator Narmak uploaded a video to their YouTube account meant to answer a simple question: what would a reimagined SpongeBob SquarePants credit sequence look like if it were designed by an anime-obsessed westerner. The answer? Most likely this! The video plays on a number of visual anime cliches like having characters dramatically stare off-screen moments before a moving into a fluid action scene, and is chock full of wordless, overwrought melodrama. This reimagined anime style version of the intro still leads with Painty the Pirate—but from there, things get very anime... such as Squidward now a total Krusty Krab traitor, and Plankton actually looks like a villain! Besides including classic SpongeBob reference die-hard fans will love, Narmak turned Bikini Bottom into a type of mini Battle Royale bloodbath. Patrick — wearing a speedo — dukes it out with Squidward.
Seriously, this is almost as creepy as those 3-D renderings of SpongeBob characters as humans.
