Alabama GOP Senate Favorite Floats McConnell Ouster
Outsider Roy Moore knocks Republican leader over campaign tactics, lack of results on conservative agenda
-
-
Outsider Roy Moore, who is favored to knock off Sen. Luther Strange (R-Ala.) in this month’s Republican primary runoff, suggested Friday that Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) should be replaced as majority leader.
In an interview with LifeZette, Moore objected both to McConnell’s lack of results in passing President Donald Trump’s agenda and his attempts to prop up Strange. -
“I wouldn’t necessarily think he would be a majority leader I would support,” he said. “But, you know, I can work anybody. I’m not a person who doesn’t forgive. But, you know, you don’t get over these things easily.”
McConnell’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Alabama Republicans will pick their nominee on Sept. 26 for the state vacated by Jeff Sessions, who became President Donald Trump’s attorney general. Strange, appointed to the seat by former Gov. Robert Bentley, finished second in the first round of balloting last month. Moore, a former state Supreme Court chief justice and popular figure on the religious Right, came in first.
The Senate Leadership Fund, a political action committee closely aligned with McConnell, dumped more than $2 million into the primary during the first round. Much of that went into attack ads targeting Moore and Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.), who finished third.
“I think the Establishment under McConnell is doing business the same way they did before. They don’t want change. They want to keep the same system going that they had before.”
“It has a lot to do with the kind of campaign ads they’ve run and the kind of campaign they’re running; yes, it does,” Moore said. “If you can’t run on your credentials, if you take after the other candidate with false and deceptive advertising, then what does that say about ethics? What does that say about your ethical standards? And I think that’s what’s lacking in Washington.”
Moore made it clear that his differences with McConnell extend beyond campaign tactics, however. He noted that Trump’s legislative agenda has stalled. -
“A lot is in leadership,” he said. “Yes, I think you could get different results. The people of Alabama, the people of America in November of 2016, signaled they wanted a change in the way Washington does business. And I think the Establishment under McConnell is doing business the same way they did before. They don’t want change. They want to keep the same system going that they had before.”
Moore backs Trump’s call to eliminate the filibuster rule that requires a 60-vote supermajority to pass most legislation — a move McConnell has resisted. Moore said he believes it is not just unwise but unconstitutional.
“You don’t change the Constitution by legislative fiat,” he said. “You change it by a vote of the people. If the people want to do that, that’s fine. That’s constitutional. But you don’t change it because you feel this way or that way. The problem is not the rule, itself, but the way the political parties are acting.” -
Eric Ostermeier, a research fellow at the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey School of Public Affairs, said he would not doubt Moore’s sincerity.
-
“He is not one who normally backs down from what he says,” said Ostermeier, author of a politics blog called Smart Politics.
-
At the same time. Ostermeier said, there probably are not a lot of Republican senators who are eager to challenge McConnell for majority leader and inherit the difficulties of managing a narrow majority with a demanding president applying pressure from the other side of Pennsylvania Avenue.
-
“I don’t think this will be the straw that breaks the camel’s back as far as his hold over his caucus,” he said.

Feds Push Ahead with Border Wall Despite Funding Questions
Customs and Border Protection awards contracts for prototypes to four companies

-
-
Despite uncertainty over funding, Customs and Border Protection officials have awarded contracts for border wall prototypes to four companies.
-
The companies will be tasked with presenting designs for a reinforced concrete wall that is 18 to 30 feet high. The designs will allow officials to evaluate the proposals for new designs that could complement the wall and barrier designs that have been used for the past several years.
-
The winning companies are:
-
*Caddell Construction Co., of Montgomery, Alabama
*Fisher Industries, of Tempe, Arizona
*Texas Sterling Construction Co., of Houston
*W.G. Yates & Sons Construction Co., of Philadelphia, Mississippi -
The agency will make a decision in the next week on a bidding request for designs involving "other materials." Officials expect construction of prototypes in the fall and will meet with companies to work out the timeline.
-
Agency officials called a prototyping an "industry-tested approach to identify additional solutions" during development of a new product or method. The prototypes will allow officials to decide the best way to build the wall.
-
The money for the prototypes — which will cost $400,000 to $500,000 — comes from $20 million that the Department of Homeland Security shifted from other priorities.
Chris Chmielenski, director of content and activism at NumbersUSA, said the contracts are a sign that the administration is "holding firm" despite resistance from Democrats.
"They're just kind of ignoring what they're hearing on the other side of the aisle," he said.
Long-term, though, President Donald Trump cannot build the wall without substantial funding from a skeptical Congress.Agency officials called a prototyping an "industry-tested approach to identify additional solutions" during development of a new product or method. Vegas Company: Build Self-Sustaining Solar Border Wall
Liberal-friendly plan could put pressure on progressives, allow wall to 'pay for itself'
"At this point, it's more of a 'taste test,' to see what prototype will get the job done," Federation for American Immigration Reform spokesman Dave Ray wrote in an email to LifeZette. "But in terms of moving forward and building the wall after the prototype is selected, they will certainly need the funds from Congress."
Chmielenski said the administration's goals of the $1.6 billion requested for the fiscal year that starts in October are modest. It mostly would pay to repair and upgrade existing fencing and add a small number of new barriers. It should be non controversial, he said, adding that it is incumbent upon House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to frame it that way.
"A lot of this just boils down to how much Speaker Ryan and Mitch McConnell will be honest about what Trump is asking for," he said.
Added Ray: "The administration, along with the U.S. Border Patrol, has repeatedly stressed the importance of the border wall as one part of a comprehensive strategy to regain control of illegal immigration. President Trump promised to get the wall built, and his supporters will be looking for continued progress on that promise."
Federal Judge Blocks Texas’ Ban on Dismemberment Abortion
A federal judge temporarily blocked a Texas law that banned second trimester dismemberment abortions in which unborn babies are “torn limb from limb” and then extracted from the uterus.
Following a challenge by Planned Parenthood, U.S. District Judge Lee Yeakel issued a two-week injunction Thursday against the law – signed in June by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) – that would have taken effect Friday.
The judge wrote that Planned Parenthood and the other plaintiffs satisfied a requirement for the temporary injunction showing that “threatened injury to the Plaintiffs outweighs any damage that the temporary restraining order might cause the State.”
“The court concludes that plaintiffs have established that absent a temporary restraining order they will suffer irreparable harm by being unable to access the most commonly used and safest previability-second-trimester-abortion procedure ahead of any substantial constitutional review of the act,” Yeakel wrote.
Planned Parenthood celebrated the injunction on Twitter, arguing the Texas statute blocks women’s access to abortion.
We've seen how restrictions on abortion can push it out of reach. Today’s order will ensure women can continue to get the care they need!
Planned Parenthood – America’s largest abortion provider – and others that profit from abortion object to the term “dismemberment” – preferring instead “D&E” (dilation and evacuation) – and claim these are one of the safest procedures for women.
“We’re grateful that today’s decision will protect women’s access to one of the safest and most common methods of abortion in the second trimester,” Raegan McDonald-Mosley, chief medical officer at Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said, according to Reuters. “This dangerous law is yet another attempt by politicians to ban abortion step by step and method by method, regardless of who it hurts.”
Abortion by dismemberment kills fetuses by tearing them limb from limb while they are still alive, causing the unborn victim to bleed to death. The U.S. Supreme Court holds that states have an interest in protecting and fostering respect for human life, including unborn life.
“Dismemberment abortions are gruesome and inhumane, which makes it troubling that a district court would block Texas’ lawful authority to protect the life of unborn children from such a barbaric practice,” added Marc Rylander, director of communications for Paxton’s office. “The Texas Attorney General will continue to defend our state’s legal right to protect the basic human rights and dignity of the unborn.”
dismember[ing] the living unborn child and extract[ing] the unborn child one piece at a time from the uterus through the use of clamps, grasping forceps, tongs, scissors, or a similar instrument that, through the convergence of two rigid levers, slices, crushes, or grasps, or performs any combination of those actions on, a piece of the unborn child’s body to cut or rip the piece from the body.
While the law did not ban other types of “D&E” abortions, it did prohibit the purchase or sale of the body parts of aborted babies, and require the disposal of aborted remains in a humane and respectful way.
The abortion clinic lawyers are attempting to frame this lawsuit on how SB 8 will affect Texas women and the abortion industry, however the important question before the court is whether this type of procedure is something Texas has the right to prohibit. In the hearing over the temporary restraining order earlier this week, the attorney for the state opened his comments in court clarifying, “SB 8 is designed to do one thing: stop the brutal and gruesome procedure of living dismemberment abortions.”
In a medical animation video, former abortionist Dr. Anthony Levatino demonstrates a second-trimester “D&E” abortion during which the abortionist uses instruments to remove the limbs from an unborn baby, between 13 to 24 weeks into a pregnancy, prior to extraction from the uterus:
National pro-life leaders also pointed to the gruesomeness of the dismemberment abortion procedure.
In a statement sent to Breitbart News, Father Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life, said:
Once again, a judge has considered the financial pain suffered by abortionists to be more important than the physical pain experienced by babies who are torn limb from limb. There’s only one reason the abortion industry is challenging Texas’s law protecting unborn babies – abortionists will lose money if it goes into effect.
“There is no need for an injunction and there is no need for a hearing,” Pavone added. “We’re talking about the dismemberment of living children. Civilized societies don’t permit that, and it’s that simple.”
Texas Right to Life adds, nevertheless, that the ruling is “the first step in a longer and consequential legal battle over this dynamic and historic legislation.”
“Judge Yeakel’s granting of the TRO today is expected given his past of ruling against Pro-Life legislation,” the group continued. “Texas Right to Life is thankful to Attorney General Ken Paxton and his expert team who have stated their dedication to defending the Dismemberment Abortion Ban to the highest court necessary.”
According to the injunction, the law is blocked until a Sept. 4 hearing.
Buh-Bye, Hate News
There’s an argument that it’s good for conservatives to read/watch liberal fake news programs so we know what the other side is saying. And to a large extent I agree.
But CNN and MSNBC, not to mention the other major networks along with most of the big-city liberal newspapers, have devolved to something less than fake news over the past several months. When it comes to President Trump, they’ve become HATE news.
The joke going around the internet – and it’s both funny and sad because it’s so true – is that if Donald Trump walked on water, the liberal news organs would report that he can’t swim.
Indeed, despite his near-flawless handling of the disaster in Texas, earlier this week the hate news sunk so low as to criticize First Lady Melania Trump for wearing high heels before she boarded the helicopter to travel to Texas even though she wore tennis shoes once on the ground.
These people are sick puppies.
There is enough negativity in life that I don’t need to invite it into mine by watching or reading hate news. So I stopped following CNN on Twitter and refuse to watch it on TV.
And while I initially worried that I might miss something – I’m not missing anything at all. Life is good again.
Trump Donates $1M to Harvey Relief…Here’s How Much Obama Donated as President
President Donald Trump has been working hard over the past week to ensure that the people of Texas get whatever resources they need from the federal government to help them recover and rebuild from the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey.
At Thursday’s press briefing, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced that Trump would be donating $1 million of his own money to the relief efforts, The Associated Press reported.
Huckabee Sanders announced that Trump would be reaching out to reporters to help him decide to which charities he should send the money. This is a gesture that will undoubtedly be greeted with hearty thanks by any charity that receives the money.
Trump’s gesture has brought up an interesting comparison. Forbes reported that during Obama’s entire time in office, he only donated $1.1 million to various charities.

WATCH: White House says that Pres. Trump pledges to donate $1,000,000 in personal money to #Harvey relief efforts.
Of that $1.1 million, Obama only gave $118.5k to disaster relie services.
Of course, Trump is much richer than Obama is, but Obama did make over $10 million while in office.
CNN reported that the Trump campaign has also asked supporters to donate to various charities such as the Red Cross to help out in Texas.
“He actually asked that I check with the folks in this room since you are very good at research and have been doing a lot of reporting into the groups and organizations that are best and most effective in helping and providing aid, and he’d like some suggestions from the folks here and I’d be happy to take those,” Huckabee Sanders stated.
This isn’t the first time Trump has gone out of his way to help the victims of hurricanes. Snopes reported that in 2016, in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew, the Trump/Pence campaign delivered food and other supplies to the victims of the Hurricane in North Carolina.
Don’t expect the media to applaud Trump for this incredible act of generosity. After all, they would never want to admit that Trump actually did something nice to help people.
Instead, they will criticize his wife’s clothing, his style of speaking and literally anything else they can find to discredit him. It’s quite sad to watch.
BREAKING: Fed-Up Trump Sends Kim Jong-Un Powerful Message
Luis Miguel
Tensions with a nuclear-armed North Korea remain unresolved, even as the aggressive Kim regime continues its development of intercontinental missiles with ever-greater range. Although the viable options are unclear, President Trump emphasizes he is willing to consider unconventional options to deal with the threat.
In a widely publicized statement posted to Twitter, Trump asserted, “The US has been talking to North Korea, and paying them extortion money, for 25 years. Talking is not the answer!” The tweet raises questions about whether the president will go forth with a military solution in North Korea.
Trump’s remark comes in the light of Pyongyang’s latest show of force. As the New York Times reported, North Korea launched a ballistic missile over the Japanese island of Hokkaido on Tuesday.
The missile landed in the sea but came so close to civilians that the Japanese government prompted its citizens to take cover. Both the Japanese and American governments immediately responded to the intimidation with harsh words.
President Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe vowed to increase pressure on the communist nation. The US carried out its own show of power in response to North Korea, flying several fighter jets over South Korea in a joint exercise with South Korean F-15s.
However, it is unknown how much of an impact the display will have on North Korea’s Kim Jong-un. He has repeatedly resisted pressure on all fronts, continuing with his nuclear program which he knows gives him leverage on the world stage.
Prime Minister Abe noted the seriousness of the situation. As reported by NPR, Abe said: “The reckless act of firing a missile over our nation is an unprecedented, grave and critical threat and it is an act that significantly diminishes the region’s peace and security, and we have lodged a firm protest.” President Trump’s statement hints at military action, and calls to mind past threats. Trump promised Pyongyang earlier this month that the US would meet threats with “fire and fury like the world has never seen.”
According to CNN, Trump followed up his warning with a statement that, “Military solutions are now fully in place, locked and loaded, should North Korea act unwisely. Hopefully Kim Jong-un will find another path!”
Despite these words, Trump’s senior advisers continually offer indications that the US is seeking diplomatic solutions rather than military ones.
Defense One reported that following President’s Trump’s “talking is not the answer” tweet, Secretary of Defense James Mattis insisted, “We’re never out of diplomatic solutions.” Nevertheless, as the situation continues to escalate, it becomes increasingly doubtful whether diplomatic solutions are still possible.
