Roadside Attraction
[by Fred Lynch in North Smithfield, Rhode Island]For years and years I've driven by this unusual structure, and it's always been empty. It has sat dejected, first on one side of the busy turnpike, and then on the other.
If you can't tell, it's a large wooden ice cream stand, shaped like a farmer's milk can. Buildings like these that illustrate what they sell are called novelty architecture. This one, like the turnpike it watches, were built in an earlier era, when automobiles were first growing in use. This small highway (Route 146) connects two mid-sized cities, Providence, Rhode Island and Worcester, Massachusetts. Along this road you can also find two drive-in theaters - one abandoned and one (just across from the milk can) enjoying a retro revival. We call sites like these Americana. They were built with optimism.
As I sit and draw with noisy trucks and cars whizzing behind me, and the trash and weeds scattered before me, I wonder how long this silly and sad landmark will continue to stand. How long does optimism last?
Fearing that the end is near, I draw with the hope that although I can't save a building, I can perhaps extend the memory of it.
