This is not about a hotel

[By Marcia Milner-Brage in Cedar Falls, Iowa]

This is about a word painted on a tall chimney in downtown. HOTEL is on all four sides. For the record, it’s the Black Hawk Hotel’s chimney. The Black Hawk is on the first block of Main Street and dates back to 1858. After 30 years of living here, I never paid much attention to this chimney. Then in the summer of 2016, the word was painted on the reddish brick. Now, the word defines the chimney. Now, whenever I’m downtown, I look to see if I can see the word. From Overman Park (looking from the west), which is across the street from the police station and City Hall, I could see the whole word. From my drawing, one might deduce we have hotel police in Cedar Falls. One truth from this drawing: the Black Hawk Hotel has a mansard roof.

Sometimes, because of my angle of view, I can not see the whole word. On W. 2nd Street there’s a tiny eatery–Ginger Thai–on the same block as the hotel. I’ve been told that if you like hot and spicy this is the place. Its proximity to the chimney speaks to this recommendation. I drew this from the sidewalk across the street, looking from the south.

Such a tall chimney with HO HO written on it leads me to imagine Santa Claus flying over my town in his sleigh on Christmas Eve, bringing gifts to all the good children of Cedar Falls. I set up my easel at the base of the earthen dike that protects downtown from potential flooding from the Cedar River. Looking from the east, at the end of E. 2nd Street, I could see the backs of the buildings that front on Main Street, the awnings of a brewpub, the top of the grey mansard roof of the Black Hawk Hotel, and, of course, a portion of the ubiquitous chimney.

A true sign of endearment is when you call someone or something simply by its first initial. I’ve always loved letters and drawn alphabets. Perhaps this affection is in my DNA. My maternal grandfather (who I never met) had on his early 20th century entry visa to the United States: occupation SIGN PAINTER. I drew this one from the parking lot behind the buildings that front on Main Street, again from the east. I love this sign. I have a strong affection for this ‘H’.
