Torres del Paine National Park

Sketch from Sarmiento Lake with Torres del Paine in the background

[By Erika Brandner in Patagonia, Chile]

I had the privilege to visit the Torres del Paine National Park in early september, due to the Marathon that my husband wanted to run. The park encompasses mountains, glaciers, lakes, and rivers in southern Chilean Patagonia. Reserve of the Biosphere by UNESCO and Eighth Natural Wonder of the World.
The Torres del Paine (Towers) are the distinctive three granite peaks of the Paine mountain range or Paine Massif. They extend up to 2,800 meters above sea level, and are joined by the Cuernos del Paine (Horns)

I made this sketch on a 10 minutes tourism stop  (I finished the details later with a coffee). It shows the Sarmiento Lake and behind, the Paine Massive with the Horns and the Towers. The lake has a  white border due to a calcium carbonate called Aragonite.

Laguna Amarga
The name of this lagune comes from the bitter taste of its waters: they have a high salt content, which concentrates by evaporation, leaving a white layer and in the bank.

This sketch shows: Left: Laguna Amarga - Right: Nordernskjöld lake

Nordenskjöld Lake
View of the Paine Massif and its Horns, in contrast with the green color of the waters of the lake. On the horizon you can see the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. Its name pays homage to Otto Nordenskjöld, swedish naturalist who visited the area in 1898.

Puerto Natales is the capital of the province of Ultima Esperanza (Last Hope), as can be seen is located at sea level, at the edge of the Señoret channel and opposite the Patagonian Andes Mountain Range. View from my hotel

The closest city and gateway to the natural park of Torres del Paine is Puerto Natales (247 km to the northwest of Punta Arenas city). It was colonized by Chilotes (people from Chiloe Island), in addition to German and English settlers who with their particular perseverance, transformed this city and all the Patagonia in one of the livestock producers and exporters in the world, until the end of the 17th century.

Puerto Natales Main Square is called "Prat" Square and it was build in the decade of the 20, when the German consul Mr. Rodolfo Stubenrauch planted the topiary pine trees. It is surrounded by the salesian Maria Auxiliadora Church in neoclassical style (1927)  and the old municipal building (1929)
