Spitalfields from the cemetery

[By James Hobbs in London, UK.] London's Urban Sketchers met at the weekend to draw around Spitalfields, on the edge of the city's East End. Here, the financial district backs onto a big market, a buzzing creative and art community, a big Bangladeshi population, roaming hipsters, crowds of international tourists attracted by the crashing pound, and extremes of wealth and poverty. The churchyard of Hawksmoor's beautiful Christ Church, from which I drew this, is popular with rough sleepers, and close to the ruthlessly gentrified Fournier Street, where the artists Gilbert and George live. Other local artists were spotted out and about, although not with sketchbooks: Tracey Emin and Michael Landy passed by as we drew. They would have been welcome to join us.
