I usually work in concertina books when I’m travelling. This time I tried something new and took two Fabriano blocks with me, working alternately between them. We arrived in each village in the late afternoon and that’s when I sat quietly sketching, feeling pleasantly exercised and blessed to be doing what I was doing.
Some images I left just as drawings. Mostly I added watercolour in the evening – for me it always seems easier to do away from the subject, easier to try and be looser.
I loved the clusters of traditional buildings and the red rooves but most of all I loved drawing the granite espigueiros, the distinctive maize stores, functional but so very spiritual, that are such a part of this beautiful park.
Now I’m home with a little pile of 5 x 7 inch sketches. Next time it’s back to a concertina.
