Firestorm: Recovery

[By Richard Sheppard in Santa Rosa, California]
The fires that ravaged Wine Country last month have finally been extinguished. Firefighters, working to exhaustion over the course of three weeks, finally gained control of the fires, and at about the same time, autumn rains smothered any remaining embers.
Estancia was a residential area that is now flattened.
Soon after, residents were allowed to return to their properties in the hopes of finding heirlooms, photos, jewelry, and other precious items that were spared by fire.

According to our local newspaper, the Press Democrat, “In Sonoma County, 3,963 residential structures suffered a total loss, while 7,776 had a partial loss. In Napa County, 392 homeowners lost their property, while 1,222 had a partial loss. In Mendocino County, 143 insured residences were destroyed, while 304 suffered partial damage from the Redwood Valley fire.”
Fast food restaurant Arby's has all but disappeared. Notice the front doors are still standing.
In Sonoma County, the burn zones are mostly located in the Sonoma Valley and northern part of Santa Rosa. The Alexander Valley where I live and the nearby Dry Creek Valley fortunately were spared except for the hills above Geyserville.
Trader Joes was partially burned and will reopen.
As I stood in the parking lot sketching the ruins of Kmart, a woman pulled up in a car next to me and said, “It’s so sad to see all this gone. It’s unbelievable really. My first job was at this Kmart store.”

Though the fires have impacted everyone in the area, for those who didn’t lose their home or place of work, life has returned to normal. But the physical and emotional scars that are left will be remembered for many years to come.
Kmart has burnt to the ground except for a few cement walls still stand.
