Georgia shrimp boats

[By Marcia Milner-Brage in Darien, Georgia, USA]
Darien is a tiny Georgia town at the mouth of the Altamaha River, a tidal river that empties into the Atlantic Ocean. Darien is about halfway between Savannah, Georgia and Jacksonville, Florida. My husband and I stayed overnight in late October, on our way to a longer stay on a nearby Georgia barrier island.

Shrimp boats lined the riverfront. Long poles stuck out of the boats like chopsticks. From what I surmised, these boats go out at low tide and cast nets that are attached to the poles. The net settles to the bottom. When the net is pulled up, cinched up like a pouch, white shrimp is the catch. The shrimp season is between June and December. The boats in my drawing seemed to be commercial trawlers. Although there are recreational shrimp harvesters, too.

I drew this from the outdoor deck of Skipper’s Fish Camp restaurant. Don't expect a drawing of the scrumptious, freshly caught Georgia shrimp and flounder that we had just eaten. I’m an urban sketcher that doesn’t mix eating with drawing. There was a temperate breeze. Late afternoon sunlight glistened on the water. How welcoming! I had flown from Iowa that morning, leaving before dawn. The temperature had been 22° F. Here it was a balmy 70°F.
