Haunted? Yeah Nah

[By Murray Dewhurst in Auckland]

This is Carlyle House, a local character since 1886. Built in Italianate style it would have looked spectacular nestled in a neighbourhood of tin roofed single story wooden houses.

It still looks spectacular but in a different way to what was originally intended. More a ramshackle, and downright spooky looking kind of spectacular. Far more interesting!

Part of The United Church of Tonga and right next to their church, hence the Tongan flag flying proudly at top left. It wasn't too long ago that ladies would sell beautiful traditional tapa cloth from the front steps. These days it's fenced and even razor wired off – most likely to keep the paranormal hunters out.

Imaginations get creative and stories grow. They say the place is haunted, something to do with a 1912 fire that killed 43 children back when it was The Costley Training Institution for Orphans. The only thing is there is no official record of such a fire.

Spooky looking for sure, but haunted? Yeah, nah.
