Peterborough Cathedral returns

[By James Hobbs in Peterborough] My much-loved mother-in-law died late in the summer, and it was while sorting out her flat in north-west London that this drawing of Peterborough Cathedral recently came to light. I drew it in 1990 when I spent six months travelling around the country in a camper van with a stack of homemade sketchbooks and a bunch of 2B pencils. I remember drawing it one evening in the silence of the cathedral close, the light fading, the tourists all departed. It felt as if I had the whole massive 12th-century thing to myself, just for a while.

In 2013, I shared on this blog a similar view of the cathedral, drawn at the same time. I had quite forgotten this second version, which had been extracted from the sketchbook and framed – and which is now, sadly, returned.
