[By Murray Dewhurst in Auckland] This pre-Victorian place in nearby St Mary's Bay sold recently — first time for sale since the 30's, and boy was it ridgy didge! It even came complete with it's original laundry 'copper' in one of the outhouses and an outside toilet (providing easier access for the night soil man).
A shame it couldn't be kept as a museum because it gave a good idea of how we lived a century ago (check out some photos here). With property prices the way they are in Auckland the land is too valuable to leave, so it's undergoing a major rework. It will be interesting to see what comes of it.
Got to love the plastic portable toilet sitting on a jaunty angle in the front yard, branded 'ShitBox, the safe hi-vis toilet box'. I'd hate to be the apprentice – builders are notorious practical jokers so I suspect toilet breaks on this job would be precarious to say the least.
This Victorian villa just a few blocks away has been left to run-down severely. Built with all the twiddly bits that Victorians loved so much, she's not looking so grand any more and rumour has it that it's soon to be demolished rather than done up. Let's hope not!
