Vancouver from my desk
[Guest post by Jito da Silva in Vancouver, Canada] I arrive early in the office. Usually before seven. Work is supposed to start at 8.30am, though: 7.00am to 8.30am is my drawing time. I work in a large architectural firm in Vancouver, Canada. Most architects enjoy starting late, so early mornings are very quiet and serene. There are just one or two people among a sea of empty desks. Lately, I’ve been drawing what I see: desks, chairs, paper and even a Rubik’s Cube on a shelf. Besides, during this last summer, mornings were particularly beautiful with triangles of yellow sun shining on the floor.A few weeks ago, I was “promoted” to a window seat. My window overlooks downtown Vancouver from the 13th floor. I did a pencil drawing with transparent Photoshop colour (top image), but my drawing was not very accurate. I missed many parts of the landscape. So, at the bottom of the above drawing, I wrote: “My office window sees: the Hexagonal Sun Building (1912, Tuff Whiteway Architect), the downtown eastside, water (difficult to tell from my drawing), mountains and some giraffe-looking cranes in the Vancouver Port. West Pender Street lies at the bottom of the drawing, while West Hastings is the next one further north. The Woodward neon rotating “W” ended up behind the window mullion. So I did a little vignette [visible at the bottom of the drawing].”
I bought a new fountain pen a few days ago. I hadn’t used one in years, so it is an excuse to sketch from my office window. For this drawing (above) I turned my head to the left, and admired the Dominion Building, which was the highest building in the British Empire when it was built in 1910.
One of my sketches (above) shows my view of my neighbour's desk. It is a tablet sketch, later worked on with Illustrator. I am still learning the program and its compatibility with my tablet. On the positive side, Illustrator allows you to change line weights and colours. On the negative, what you see on the screen is not what is going to be printed on a piece of paper.
At 8.30am, as I mentioned, office work is supposed to start. And I do start to work as an old fogey architect. Among 100 people, I am the only one who still uses a small drafting table, triangles and French curves. I am considered peculiar. So, I thought, my drafting table also deserves a drawing too. This time, a tablet drawing with Illustrator’s transparent blue.
