Why do I choose such difficult subjects to paint?
[by Marion Rivolier from Paris, France]As you now know, I really like to paint artworks because it is a way to better understand the architecture of a place. It is also a way to observe and analyze how the artwork plays (or not) with the place.
These three paintings were made in different places, but I used the same method to explore the artworks : the negative space. It is not the easy way! Without any preliminary drawing, you have to observe and to really think before beginning.
The first one is a sculpture "Waterbones" by Loris Cecchini in the Centquatre, a contemporary art center in Paris. It is composed of many individual bone-like elements. I began by drawing the spaces inside the bones, the negative space. I wanted to observe what happens in the empty spaces of the sculpture, how the orange of the brick or the darkness of the windows can reveal the lightness of the bones.
I don’t know if this painting is successful but creating it was really exciting!
For the second one, the challenge was to paint at night (and in the wind)! During the Event “la Nuit Blanche,” Parisian people could write some words on the quai de Seine. The technicians moved huge letters to compose the words. When I began, all letters were on the left and a few minutes later they were on the right! I really didn’t see which colors I was using, but I tried to reveal the whiteness of the letters with the darker part of the place.
Painting difficult subjects helps me go past my comfort zone.
