The high-speed train was near Dupont when it derailed.

Margaret WenteMARGARET WENTE
Is this the beginning of the end for Donald Trump?

Everybody's hoping so – especially the journalistic class. That's why they're so giddy over the defeat of Roy Moore, the Alabama swamp creature with the well-documented taste for teenage girls. This is not just a victory for simple human decency. It's also a taste of greater victories to come. "As goes Moore, so goes Trumpism," Ross Douthat's New York Times column predicted wishfully.

Here's how the wishful part goes. If the Democrats can win a Senate seat in the United States' most brutal, racist heart of darkness, then maybe they can take back the Senate and the House next year. And if they take back Congress, then Donald Trump and his odious gang of Republican enablers will be finished. One day, my children, we will look back on these crazy times and see that they were just a noxious fever dream.

I hate to be a party pooper. But I'm thinking not so fast. People have been predicting Mr. Trump's demise since the day he moved into the White House. And he's still here.
Mr. Moore wasn't just a flawed candidate. He was the worst candidate for senator in modern history – a knuckle-dragging troglodyte and a rogue judge who'd been kicked off the bench, twice. The Washington Post's devastating exposé of his amorous predations was the last straw. Even so, he lost by a mere 1.5 per cent. His miraculous defeat was attributed to a coalition of women, millennials, and black voters – the Democratic Party base. Black women voted against him by 98 per cent.

"Roy was right. God was in control," tweeted the British author J.K. Rowling. "What he didn't realize was, She's black."

But cosmic justice wasn't really what defeated Roy Moore. It was the conscience of ordinary Republicans, as expressed by Alabama's other deeply conservative senator, Richard Shelby. "I think Alabama deserves better," he told CNN. His decision to repudiate Mr. Moore (and defy the Republican Party establishment) was highly influential.

Many if not most conservatives were elated by the result. Reflecting popular sentiment, the headline in The New York Post read: Perv Moore Loses.

Alabama's business community also has a healthy sense of self-preservation. They're desperate to rebrand their state as modern and forward-looking. As one lawyer told The Washington Post, "We want to be attractive to the smartest people in the country." That combination of moral revulsion and a deep desire to improve their state's miserable image explains why more than 22,000 people – mostly Republicans – showed up at the polls to cast write-in votes for candidates other than Mr. Moore. That pretty much equals the margin of victory for his opponent.

Alabamians, in other words, were voting against Mr. Moore, not Mr. Trump. And unless the Republicans field a bunch of absolutely terrible candidates next year, it's unlikely that masses of red counties will suddenly turn blue.

Still, hope springs eternal. Perhaps the Russia investigation will bring him down. As conspiracy theorists tell it, Mr. Trump's secret and long-standing ties with Russia resulted in massive collusion between the Russians and his campaign to throw the election. Now that special counsel Robert Mueller has indicted Mr. Trump's former national security adviser Michael Flynn, it's only a matter of time before the canaries begin to sing.

Unfortunately, no normal person can possibly keep track of who is being investigated by whom, and for what. So far none of it seems to amount to much. Frankly, it's hard to see Mr. Trump (or Donald Trump Jr., for that matter) as a mastermind capable of directing such a convoluted, evil scheme. In any event, the idea that Mr. Trump could be impeached is just a fantasy. It would require evidence of criminal wrongdoing so strong that his own base would abandon him and his own party would vote against him. Dream on, kids. Mr. Trump's Republican support is still running at 82 per cent.

Here's another problem. The economy is on a roll. The stock market keeps setting records. The unemployment rate has plunged to 4.1 percent. How much does Mr. Trump have to do with all this good fortune? It doesn't matter. As Bret Stephens wrote in The New York Times, the wealth effect usually beats the yuck factor.

The danger of the Democrats' victory in Alabama is that they'll take all the wrong lessons from it. They'll keep believing they don't need the white-guy vote to win. They'll keep deluding themselves that they can ignore the elemental forces that propelled Mr. Trump into power. They'll keep dismissing the economic and cultural concerns of Trump voters as racist, ignorant and backward. And they will ignore the possibility that contemporary conservatism, with all its authoritarian impulses, has a good long way to run.

If I were in a betting mood, I'd guess that the greatest threat to Mr. Trump for the next few years will not come from the Democrats, or from the Russia probe. It will come from his own incompetence in office, combined with an appetite for Big Macs that's downright life-threatening. And even if the junk food does Mr. Trump in, Trumpism will be alive and well.

Hundreds Attend Funeral Honoring ‘Abandoned’ Vietnam Veteran

Hundreds of strangers gathered at a church in Indianapolis, Indiana, Saturday to honor a Vietnam veteran with no known living relatives.

Glenn Shelton, 68, who had a storied career with the Marines during the Vietnam War and earned a Purple Heart while serving with them, died November 26, according to his obituary.
Indiana Funeral Care organized Saturday’s service and advertised it on social media. The event grew so popular the organizers had to move the ceremony to a larger venue.
“We don’t know anything about him, so it’s just rewarding that they can still find time to come out and pay their respects,” Sara Thompson, Indiana Funeral Care General Manager, told WXIN. “Glenn might have been abandoned in life, but he will not be abandoned in death.”
Attendees of the ceremony also received a special surprise—a dog tag engraved with Shelton’s name.
“It’s just absolutely wonderful,” Russell Pryor, commander for the VFW District 11, told WXIN. “It shows me that no matter when you served, who you served with or where you served, we’re here to support you.”
After the funeral service, Shelton’s burial ceremony took place at Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison, about 48 miles away from Louisville.
Shelton also received well-wishes from people who commented on his online obituary, with many paying their respects and thanking the veteran for his service.

GOOD RIDDANCE! MSNBC’s top star to be fired!?

Is MSNBC’s top star Chris Matthews on his way out of the network?
Saturday, a report by The Daily Caller quickly had industry insiders speculating that the longtime host of MSNBC’s primetime show, “Hardball with Chris Matthews,” could be fired soon. NBC News executives haven’t given away their plans, though.
“A day after it was revealed that NBC paid money to a female staffer in 1999 who accused MSNBC’s Chris Matthews of sexual harassment, the network kept mum Sunday about whether there were other women who had accused the long-time host of inappropriate behavior,” Fox News reported.
Calls for Matthews immediate removal exploded across social media during the weekend —
Chris Matthews must resign.
It's one thing to have sexual predators on your staff, but to cover up for them and pay the women, the way that NBC did with Chris Matthews accuser, is on a whole other level. NBC protected the predator and paid off the victim like a piece of cheap meat.
According to Talking Points Memo, the resurfaced controversy originally came after an “employee alleged that Matthews made inappropriate remarks about her, and that Matthews was formally reprimanded. According to [an MSNBC] spokesperson, the company concluded that Matthews’ remarks were inappropriate, but not intended as propositions.”
If he’s fired, Matthews would share the fate of superstar colleagues Matt Lauer, Harold Ford Jr., Mark Halperin, and a host of others caught up in a sexual harassment witch hunt that has spread like wildfire through the liberal media.
Critics have pointed out the hypocrisy of the mainstream media in their coverage of the witch hunt —
Lightweight Brian Stelter of @CNN covered the Bill O’Reilly sexual assault story for days straight. Will he do the same for leftist Chris Matthews who sexually assaulted a staffer at NBC and then NBC paid her big bucks.

I’ll be waiting to hear from @brianstelter. Will you?
Matthews has been the host of MSNBC’s “Hardball” for over twenty years and is considered one of the cable news network’s most bankable stars.

Trump: Chain Migration ‘Totally Incompatible with National Security’

During Saturday’s Weekly Address, President Trump called for an end to chain migration and the visa lottery and argued the current immigration system “helps special interests, but hurts American workers, taxpayers, and national security.”
Transcript as Follows:
“My Fellow Americans,
This week I signed the National Defense Authorization Act – a historic step forward to rebuild our military. Now, it is critical for Congress to pass the Clean Government Appropriations Bill that fully funds our Military Needs. We must not play politics with our troops – we should pass a clean funding bill and leave the politics aside. We must protect our nation.
I’d also like to take a moment today to discuss our immigration system, and how we can reform it to make it work for everyday Americans.
Our current immigration system helps special interests, but hurts American workers, taxpayers, and national security.
For decades now, U.S. immigration rules have been based on an outdated system known as Chain Migration. Under chain migration, foreign nationals can come to the United States and bring in unlimited numbers of foreign relatives. A single immigrant can begin a chain that could ultimately bring in dozens of increasingly distant relations.
Because these individuals are admitted solely on the basis of family ties – not skill or not merit – most of this immigration is lower-skilled, putting great strain on federal welfare.
And because there is no real selection criteria, the current system is totally incompatible with national security.
This week, a terrorist exploded a pipe bomb on a busy subway passage during rush hour in New York City, injuring innocent Americans. This individual arrived through chain migration.
In October, another terrorist drove a truck into pedestrians and cyclists in New York City, killing 8 people and wounding many others. That individual came through a visa lottery.
It is time to create a merit-based immigration system that makes sense for a modern economy – selecting new arrivals based on their ability to support themselves financially and to make positive contributions to U.S society. Base it on love of our country. We want people that come in, that can love our country.
This process begins with Congress passing a bill to end chain migration and also end the visa lottery.
I have called on Congress to do exactly that. Ending chain migration and also ending the visa lottery will allow us to have commonsense immigration rules that promote assimilation and wage growth. It also promotes, most importantly, safety. It’ll help Americans both old and new to thrive, flourish and prosper.
Thank you, and God Bless America.”

Miss Iraq’s Family Forced to Flee Country over Selfie with Miss Israel

by ADELLE NAZARIAN

Miss Israel Adar Gandelsman and Miss Iraq Sarah Idan, Miss Universe 201735
Miss Iraq’s family was forced to flee their native Iraq for fear of their lives after photos of her smiling next to Miss Israel, as well as pictures of her in a bikini, taken during the Miss Universe Pageant last month surfaced online.
Sarah Idan, who represented Iraq in the beauty pageant, lives in the United States.
“The two of those things together caused a mess for her back home where people made threats against her and her family that if she didn’t return home and take down the photos, they would remove her (Miss Iraq) title, that they would kill her,” Miss Israel Adar Gandelsman said, according to the Times of Israel.
“Out of fear, they left Iraq at least until the situation calms down,” Gandelsman reportedly said.
Idan posted a picture of her with Gandelsman on her Instagram account with the caption, “Peace and love from Miss Iraq and Miss Israel,” along with several hearts.
Galdeslman posted a similar picture on her Instagram account, writing, “Get to know, this is Miss Iraq and she’s amazing.”
Last month, Idan reportedly apologized to all those offended, writing, “I want to stress that the purpose of the picture was only to express hope and desire for peace between the two countries.” She added, “to all those who consider [the picture] harmful to the Palestinian cause.”
This is not the first time the Arab world has reacted to beauty pageants with such fervor.
In August, then-Miss Lebanon, Amanda Hanna, was stripped of her crown and title after it was discovered that she traveled to Israel, which is forbidden by Lebanese law.
In 2015, then-Miss Lebanon, Sally Greige faced calls to strip her title after she appeared in a photo with then-Miss Israel, Doron Matalon, and two other beauty queens.
Greige had defended herself at the time by saying Matalon harassed her into taking a picture with her.
“From the first day I arrived at the Miss Universe pageant I was very careful not to take any pictures with Miss Israel, who tried repeatedly to take pictures with me,” Greige wrote. “While I was preparing with Miss Slovenia and Miss Japan to get our photograph taken, Miss Israel jumped in and took a selfie with her phone and posted it on social media.”
