Phone sketches on the Vancouver SkyTrain

[Guest post by Michael Aceves in Vancouver, Canada]
While working in Canada for the winter, I purposely sought out a small flat beyond downtown Vancouver which had the advantage of not only being cheaper than a city apartment (Vancouver is a rather expensive place to live) but also gave me about 15 minutes of daily ride time to draw. Being from Los Angeles, I’m usually traveling from one place to another in my own bubble/car. So I looked forward to the opportunity to sketch commuters on a regular basis.

I had lived in New York City for several years and over that time had accumulated many drawings on the subway. But that was always with a traditional sketchbook which typically required me to take a seat while drawing. The phone allowed me the opportunity to get up close to people ... stand right in front of them and draw.... all the while looking like I was just on my phone.

I drew in Autodesk's Sketchbook Pro on my small 4.3 inch HTC EVO using just my index finger. I started on white backgrounds in the first weeks but as time went on I began to experiment with different colors for both grounds and line work. Working so small and fast really required an economy of line. The smaller screen actually seemed to work to my advantage while using my finger. All images are the same resolution and aspect ratio except the few I cropped after the fact.

For most of my time there it was cold and my fellow commuters were dressed in winter gear from head to toe. As soon as I reached the platform I would take off my gloves, loosen my jacket, get out my phone and load up a new Sketchbook Pro doc before the next train rolled in. Once on the train, I usually would survey the car for a good subject. Occasionally I would take a seat if the person sitting opposite looked interesting enough. I had places I preferred to stand, but during the rush hour things were usually too crowded to guarantee my favorite spot.

I found that most riders rarely looked at one another. It seemed like almost everyone typically looked down at their phones for the whole ride. It's as if people use their phones as a reason not to make eye contact with others around them. So having my phone out, intently looking at it, and occasionally glancing up ... seemed perfectly natural to those around me. This allowed me to stand fairly close, even right above riders, and draw them without attracting attention.

Usually people prefer to live as close as possible to their place of work in order to avoid such commutes. But I viewed time on the train as an opportunity to see people and sketch–something I missed once I returned to LA. Sure we now have a small but growing mass transit system. And even raised platforms similar to the Marine Drive station I took every day that winter. But there is still something missing, something different about it. Eh ... It may be just that polite nod of a stranger as they offer you an open seat. Such a gesture I’ve rarely seen on our fledging metro here in the City of Angels.
