The singing barber of Marianao

[By Jeroen Janssen in Havana, Cuba] It has been a long time I have not been posting here. I have to find some good excuses now ... 

Well, let's try: I am working hard to finish that book about Doel (see most of my previous posts) which has to appear in spring, in Dutch language. 

And at the same time I have been travelling to find inspiration for my next book. Which will be a book about an old African rebel who has been fighting together with Che Guevara in the Congo, 1965.

At the beginning we didn't believe our ears. My friend Hilde Baele met the man, a Rwandese called Jérôme Season, in 2007 in Rwanda, and she asked me to look for him hen I was in Rwanda in 2014. "But how can I find that man?" "Go to the barber shops in Niyamirambo, a popular quarter in Kigali, and ask for Che Guevara" And so I did, didn't find the man, but made the sketch below (look for the details to understand why I chose to visit right this barber shop and not another). I left my phone number and some days later Jérôme was calling already! First mission accomplished! We went to visit Jérôme, and made a lot of interviews and sketches. Material for a book and maybe a film. But unluckily Jérôme passed away last year.

Last month Hilde and I had the opportunity to visit Havana, Cuba, for another project. A good occasion to check all the stories Jérôme told us. And YES!!! We found very important witnesses, from people who had also been very close to Che Guevara. We checked all the places Jérôme, who lived in Cuba for some years after his adventure in Congo, has told us about. It was exactly as he described. I made a lot of sketches (have a lot of scanning work now :-( ), Hilde interviewed people, and this all will be material for the next book. 

At a certain moment I proposed to go to a barbershop (just as I did in Kigali) and to talk to the people. And it resulted in some more very important witnesses. 

And we are planning to return. To make more sketches, more interviews, to film. It's the beginning of a new adventure. 

By the way, especially for the readers in the USA and the republic of Cuba: does someone know a man, called Jean Sebasoni?

What do we know about him?

He must be about 50 years old today; maybe he lives in Florida (Miami?) and perhaps he is doctor (Pediater?) . That's what Jérôme told us about him. And he is the son of Jérôme and a Cuban woman called Olga. 

We're looking also for Olga, we don't know where to find her, only, she is not the Olga on the picture below. But the Olga below liked so much to be drawn by me, I couldn't refuse ... and I guess the Olga we are looking for worked in the same hospital (Ciro Calixto Garcia) but she must be much older, may be 70.
