Sketch Walk along Solapur Bazaar Road

[By Harshad Arole in Pune, India]
Every once in a while my Sunday outings with Urban Sketchers Pune, present me with hidden gems in my hometown. The recent visit to the Solapur Bazaar Road near Pul Gate in Pune Cantonment was one such experience.
As the name suggests the road must have been the trade route between the two towns of Pune and Solapur in the olden days but what drew us urban sketchers to this location was a cluster of old buildings packed in line on one side of a small stretch of around 300m. I love sketching buildings in elevation and this was a treat for me as I ended up sketching around 11-12 structures. Although teeming with residents, the buildings weren’t in their best shape but had retained the old world charm.
Two imposing structures stood flanking the ends of the stretch. On the right was the ‘Dalaya Jagannath Ashram’ constructed in 1921 and to the left was ‘Behramji Building’ with its exquisite wooden panelling and a characteristic roof. The short 1-2 storeyed buildings in between had a collection of various shops ranging from stationery shops, a laundry, a small workshop and even a bakery.

For some time now, I wanted to try out a long format sketch and this was an ideal subject matter. Starting with the Behramji building followed with the bunch of small structures, a sketch was done spread over four sheets from my sketch book. Later I glued those together with tape. Stepping aside from my usual pen over watercolour technique, a pure line work dominant sketch was fun to create.

Such a small stretch of road but it had a small play park area next to the pavement. A couple of buildings peeked through the tall trees making a pretty sight.
Next to these was another pair of buildings very close together, showing their uniqueness with brightly coloured doors and walls and prompting a quick watercolour sketch

While all these buildings had stood over years maintaining their character, the road had gone through a lot of changes which was evident by the varying road levels. It was an interesting view to sketch where the purple doors of one building were nearly halfway below the road level.

The ‘Dalaya Jagannath Ashram’ (top cover sketch) was the last of the lot following which, were all newly constructed concrete structures. It was a fitting end to enjoyable sketch walk.
