[By Murray Dewhurst in Waipu]  Our weather is all over the place this year. We've already been nailed by two cyclones and a heavy duty storm – cyclones Kelvin, Gita and Storm Fehi did their damage and parts of the country are still drying out and rebuilding roads.

Don't you like how they give these events names so we can feel a close relationship with them? I think if they were people you would give them a very wide birth! Let's hope our weather forecast isn't as pessimistic as this fear mongering news report a few days ago.

Still we've been lucky to get some superb days, and, thanks to global warming we're currently having our hottest summer ever.

We managed to get up to Waipu, an hour and a half north of Auckland for a long weekend late last month where the sun was out and so were the surfers.

I did these sketches while recovering from a few sessions in the surf myself, I lay on the beach absolutely destroyed, having caught a wave for maybe every six attempts of crashing out. It's heaps of fun but you get a bashing.
