Bon Appétit! Grumpy At A Food Festival in Galway
[By Róisín Curé in Galway] I wanted to draw the Galway Food Festival because I thought it would be picturesque and colourful. But the weather has been unbelievably cold lately - we had the heaviest snowfall in forty-seven years about a month ago - and Spring hasn't properly sprung yet.
I arrived in town to sketch this morning and very soon I was having one of those "I wish I lived somewhere else" days. I am having quite a few of those this week, but that's because (a) I've just come back from a wonderful sketch tour of the south of Portugal, (b) the winter has gone on much longer than normal and (c) I have a rotten cold, which makes everything seem a bit more miserable than normal.
In this inclement mood, I decided to draw the people eating the food they had bought from the various food stalls down by Spanish Arch. I don't really agree with people standing around eating in a square: it's uncivilised. So I wanted to make a sort of Holbein-esque satire of gluttony. I didn't really find it, since it was lunchtime, I didn't see anyone overdoing it and there was no alcohol involved, but I made a point of looking for people with their mouths wide open, something hot and steaming on its way there.
In the end I think my sketch portrays a rather jolly affair. I shall have to work on this satirical-commentary thing.
