First visit to London (loved it!)
[T.K. Justin Ng in London] I was living in SoHo and I loved the narrow winding streets in the area. I found a spot to sketch that where a street forked into two and included a telephone booth as well, killing two birds with one stone.
The timing was spot on and just as I was about to finish, it started to rain. I dropped by the local Moleskine store to stamp my sketchbook as a sort of souvenir.
From Soho, I walked past the St Pauls Cathedral to get to Tate Modern. I really liked the view from the Millenium bridge looking towards St Pauls Cathedral but it was really windy and so I couldn’t sketch outdoors. The last modern art museum I sketched was Kiasma in Helsinki with a large stepped lawn in front of it. I began exploring Tate Modern from the Turbine Hall, possibly it’s most iconic space, with large installations housed within it. People were lounging on the ramp, children rolling up and down the slope. I went through several of the exhibits and found the museum shop with a great view over St Pauls Cathedral and the Millenium bridge. This was a view that I couldn’t resist sketching so I set up my tool and did another drawing. Unfortunately, the sun began to set and it was really difficult for me to watercolour so the drawing turned out a little flat.
I ended the day off with a quick drawing of the shard from the museum.
Some of the buildings in Soho reminded me of this drawing from Esplanade in Helsinki. But of course, Helsinki was a lot colder.
