Marching for Our Lives
[Various sketchers in the San Francisco Bay Area] On Saturday America marched in cities all over the country to support sensible gun control laws. Turnout was estimated to be 1.2 to 2 million people , making it one of the largest protests in American history. The San Francisco Bay Area had marches in many cities. Here are some of them in sketches.
Laurie Wigham in San Francisco: (Image at the top) I sat on the curb and tried to capture the movement and excitement of the thousands of people passing by me in a long river of sound and color.

Lots of young people gave speeches at the rally, and the speeches were short and to the point. I was especially moved by the speech by a woman who was in high school at Columbine during that shooting, and her call to get our investments out of all gun-related industries.
While listening to speeches at San Francisco’s Civic Civic I noticed how, even though I was standing in the sun with all these friendly people committed to opposing gun violence, I couldn’t stop thinking about where a gunman might be and what I’d do if shooting started. The shadow of the shooter falls over so much of our culture in America now.
Cathy McAuliffe in San Francisco: First came the women. Then came the children. The future is here, get out of the way.
Suhita Shirodkar in San Jose: Besides teenagers and middle schoolers, there were so many young parents who brought along their little kids, all bundled up against the rain. We were marching for them.
One of favorite moments was when the rain was coming down heavily. I’d shut my sketchbook but then I walked past the Resistance Chorus singing in the rain. If they can stand there in their bright orange scarves and sing through the rain, what’s to stop me from sketching?

Sonia Tamez in Oakland: I was so impressed by the intergenerational support for the young leaders! All generations and communities were engaged.
