TE Carter, author of I STOP SOMEWHERE, on not worrying about all the *other* stuff
We're thrilled to have TE Carter pop in to share more about her debut novel, I STOP SOMEWHERE.What was your inspiration for writing I STOP SOMEWHERE?
The book stems from personal experiences, stories in the news, and a local case that really struck me at a time when I wasn't sure how to talk about everything. So it was a combination of factors that all helped me to create this world where I could talk about those things in a way that felt safer.
What do you hope readers will take away from I STOP SOMEWHERE?
I hope that readers are both challenged to improve how we talk about gender, power, corruption, and class (as well as sexual violence), but I also hope that they're reminded that there's still beauty even in the darkest places. Even in tragedy, we all mean something and each person has a story to tell and a voice that can lift others'.
How long or hard was your road to publication? How many books did you write before this one, and how many never got published?
I wrote many, many books before this one, and I actually took a break because I didn't think it would ever happen for me. I think because I didn't really anticipate anything coming from this - writing only because I needed to get these thoughts out of my head - it ended up going quickly and being the right time. I wasn't worrying about all the other stuff when I wrote, which is the difference between this book and all the others.
What are you working on now?
I'm wrapping up edits on ALL WE COULD HAVE BEEN, which is coming out in 2019, and I'm writing a third novel for Feiwel and Friends due out in 2020.
ABOUT THE BOOK

Feiwel & Friends
Released 2/27/2018
Ellie Frias disappeared long before she vanished.
Tormented throughout middle school, Ellie begins her freshman year with a new look: she doesn’t need to be popular; she just needs to blend in with the wallpaper.
But when the unthinkable happens, Ellie finds herself trapped after a brutal assault. She wasn't the first victim, and now she watches it happen again and again. She tries to hold on to her happier memories in order to get past the cold days, waiting for someone to find her.
The problem is, no one searches for a girl they never noticed in the first place.
TE Carter’s stirring and visceral debut not only discusses and dismantles rape culture, but it also reminds us what it is to be human.
