To draw is to perform
[By Eduardo Salavisa in Lisbon] What has drawing from observation, on site and in public have in common with a performance? On a first glance nothing, since a performance demands an audience and drawing on a sketchbook (the best support for drawing on site) is an individual act in which the drawing is not made to be showed. The result might not be the most important factor and a mistake might be just a hesitation.
Yet, when a drawing is made amongst a crowd of people, some of them really close, they can take a look and see what is being draw, and if they get curious about what is going to be draw next (maybe them?) and feel involved then maybe we can talk about a performance. It’s the case of the drawings made on the subway on rush hour.
