Flowers and candles on Link Street, Hackney
[By James Hobbs in London] By the railway arch on Link Street, Hackney, in London’s East End, there’s a gathering of about 15 young people watching over flowers and candles marking the spot where an 18-year-old man, Israel Ogunsola, was stabbed to death this week. London is in the middle of a wave of violent crime: Israel’s death is one of more than 50 in the city so far this year, and 12 of these were teenagers. A 17-year-old boy has been charged with his murder. We have two teenagers and live in Hackney, and although knife crime has been a problem for years, these latest tragedies make you sit up.In the cause of so-called austerity, London’s police staff has been cut by a third, youth services have been closed, and education and mental health budgets slashed. We have a government more willing to bring a smile to the lips of those at the Treasury than work for the happiness, wellbeing and future of the city’s young people.
