Right Place, Right Time

[by Chris Haldane in Sydney]

Some unusual events that occurred mid-sketch on a recent holiday made me conscious of capitalizing on events that unfold before our eyes. We have a choice to continue with our original sketch plans, or to embrace flexibility and capture the unexpected. If we do the latter, our colour choices might need adjusting,  the sketch might suddenly serve us better in vertical rather than horizontal format, or the unfolding event might be only momentary and so require a speedier approach to capturing the scene than we are accustomed to.

An instance of this was when I was sketching on the walls around York Minster in England (above). Suddenly, the peace of the morning was disturbed by the sound of a helicopter descending over the tower.  Hundreds of people stopped in their tracks and possibly, like me, thought there had been a terrorist attack! But once I saw a stretcher being lowered, I realised it was a medical emergency and quickly took the chance to include the helicopter in the little space I had left on the page, before it flew off. Because of the inaccessible nature of the tower where a young man in his 20s had been taken ill, this was the only way to transport him to hospital. The helicopter isn’t a big feature of this sketch due to the lack of space, but its presence still reminds me of a unique experience while drawing the cathedral that day.

A few days later while I was sketching Manchester cathedral, police took up positions outside it, standing conveniently still for long enough for me to sketch them. They were providing security for members of the judiciary in their robes and wigs, who soon lined up outside the cathedral for the annual judiciary service. I could have waited a few minutes until they had all moved inside for the service and continued with my original sketch of just the building, but it was so much more interesting to add those flashes of red and yellow, and to have this human story add to what would have otherwise been a pretty ordinary sketch of a cathedral.

I’m sure, like me, you’ve also been sketching when the weather has suddenly changed its mood. I remember with the Opera House sketch below that Sydney’s usual blue sky setting for this icon (for which I already had my blues mixed) became thunderous within just a few minutes, and so I was left with the choice of going with my made up mixes, or changing to what was unfolding before me. I reached for the indigo and was really pleased with the drama it created instead.

So sketching on location, when people, weather and circumstances in general can be so unpredictable, calls for flexibility, but rewards us with memorable stories that enrich our experience of capturing that place at that time.
