Chappaquiddick
It’s early in the afternoon here at the Velma Teague Library in Phoenix, Arizona. One PM and it’s already in the 90s, it’s a typical early summer day here.
Helen, Helene and I saw the latest movie, Chappaquiddick, a worthwhile examination of the end of the Kennedy Dynasty.
The movie succeeded in answering the many questions surrounding the life and times of the Kennedy family.
Many myths are revealed for what they were, corrupt and political deceptive. The last Kennedy Lion was created-the old geezer and his sycophant entourage. The movie revealed just how much of a half wit Teddy always was. He resented his brothers and brought added shame to a family created of myth. The Kennedy fortune was created by old Joe’s sucking up to Nazi Germany in order to build his whiskey empire.
Teddy was consumed with trying to live up to the old codger’s desire for power. To Joe his last lion was a wimp and weakling. Teddy slobbered at the chance to prove himself worthy of the Kennedy name.
The tragic death of Mary Jo Kopechne would have brought shame on most mere mortals. Not Kennedy. The Kennedy cronies managed the events after her needless death. Yes, it would have been needless had the slobbering jerk only called for help rather than leaving Mary Jo to die a horrible and excruciating death. We now know Mary Jo may have survived many hours before running out of oxygen, her life could have been saved. Teddy Boy did nothing to save her. His biggest concern was how he would explain this to dear old dad.
The movie was presented in such a way as to not sensationalize the awful and unnecessary death of Mary Jo.
Chappaquiddick is a tiny island off Martha's Vineyard. Late on July 18, 1969, an Oldsmobile driven by Kennedy (identical to one we owned at the time) careened off the ramshackled Dike Bridge, plunging upside down in Poucha Pond.
Teddy Kennedy, a father of three with a pregnant wife, survived.
Kopechne, a respected political operative, drowned. Her body was found the next morning in the back seat. The cowardly lion Teddy did nothing, nada, to save her life.
The death of Mary Jo was more than a tragedy. It was without rhyme or reason. As pitiful as the life (and his so-called political buddies) Teddy had no excuse for the cowardice displayed by him.
Teddy Kennedy was responsible fo the death of his loyal political friend because of his reckless driving and behavior, followed by an act of total and complete incompetence.
My personal recollection of Ted Kennedy is a drunken Ivy League party boy who refused to grow up.
Political corruption of the worst sort was the Kennedy’s lasting legacy.
Mary Jo would have lived except for the cowardice of of The Senator.
The Kopechne family hopes the movie stirs more investigation, something the political flunky of a District Attorney Ed Dinis didn’t provide.
Helen and I rate the movie a hit, well worth your time and expense.
