Another way to present travel books in Saint-Céré

[by Marion Rivolier in Saint-Céré, Lot]

I just spent a lovely week in Saint-Céré in the Lot. For the past five years, Le Lieu Commun has been organizing an exhibition of "Travel books" with the work of three artists. This year it's Cathy Beauvallet, Elsie Herberstein and myself.
The weather is not ideal for such a project. But the sky, cool and cloudy, has the advantage that the colored gray clouds bring out the warmth of the limestone of the castles and buildings of the region. The Jean Lurçat museum, in a medieval castle, a little in ruins, is beautiful on the top of the green hill. I enjoyed playing with this range of red-orange and pink.

A lot of warmth also during the weekly Wednesday lunch: we are 26 to taste pea soup, vegetables, Cabecou cheese and rice pudding with lavender. At Le Lieu Commun, everything is organic and most of the members are Green. The discussions introduce us to farmers' problems, the reintroduction of salmon in the rivers and the issues surrounding the methane plants. But we are also talking about drawing because some people sketch the region in black and white or in color.

The same evening, Cathy and Elsie give a lecture on the theme of the "travel book" from the drawings of Leonardo da Vinci, through the painters of the Navy to contemporary drawing. It is a geographical, historical but also a social and activist trip sometimes. At the time, two young migrants were exhibiting their notebooks at MIAM in Sète.

They are passionate about their subject. The part that concerns drawing during the Second World War, where a little girl, Helga Weissova, locked up in Terezin, draws every day, on small pieces of paper, what happens in the camp, is incredibly moving.

We also work in schools to teach workshops to children. The theme of my workshop is "Draw your point of view on a place": what are we talking about? How do we format it? What type of notebook, etc? We obviously drew and painted outdoors, which at first surprised the children but then delighted them! On Saturday morning, I worked with them around the Saint Spérie church in Saint-Céré. I quickly sketched them as the session progressed, then they wrote their name next to their "portrait."

Throughout the week, we exhibit at La Maison des Consuls on the Place du Mercadial. I sketched a part of my showroom where I presented my project "Croisée de regards," a chronicle painted and written around the arts and artists. It's a journey to the heart of artistic creation, in movement and color.
We had a very nice week with an exceptional welcome from members of  Le Lieu Commun. If you have the opportunity to travel in the Lot, do not hesitate to draw with them: they meet one Sunday a month to draw the architecture and beautiful landscapes of the region.
