Enric arrives early

[Guest post by Cristina Curto in Barcelona]
“My eyes show the lack of sleep. I carry a baby but I feel as if I was carrying a watermelon all the day around.” When I did this sketch I believed that I still had a looooong time to draw much more…

I was told to be calm and rest, so the days flowed slowly washing little clothes and sketching at home. But the baby was in a hurry and we didn’t have to wait much, one month before the due date he was knocking the door! We went to University Hospital Dexeus in Barcelona by car at 3am. There was no need to rush because the motorways were empty. Once there, time played a strange trick, the minutes felt like hours but everything was very fast, and at 10:40am Enric was on my chest, all the pain was gone and we melted into love.

He was ready but not his lungs, so 11 days in the hospital followed the birth of little Enric. It’s incredible how you forget your own pain when your son’s health is in trouble. Despite all the worries we felt in very good hands. Doctors and nurses were always there for us with their knowledge and kind words. Kind words: it’s what you need the most of the times!

Collateral damage, Enric is turning a bit yellow. With some “sun” bathing everything turns ok.

Finally all the probes, pipes and wires are out, we can see his lovely face again.

The final step, after many days eating through a probe, we have to learn breastfeeding. The first times we need some help, but after a few tries I can even sketch!

Babies are supposed to come without instructions, but we have been given some training and lots of tricks and advice by the doctors and nurses. We go home feeling a bit prepared, at least we have something to start with...
