TRUE STORM is the third book in the True Born series, and we're delighted to have L.E. Sterling here to tell use more about it.L.E., what scene was really hard for you to write and why, and is that the one of which you are most proud? Or is there another scene you particularly love?
There’s this one scene in True Storm that I found really hilarious to work on. My novel’s heroine, Lucy Fox, prides herself on being very wise in the art of diplomacy (she was raised in a very influential political family). But in this one scene, Lucy is offered a gift by one of her suitors. But she is so preoccupied by her love interest, True Born Jared Price, who keeps her at arm’s length, that Lucy a bit clueless when she receives this token. She is very naïve!
What happens is that Lucy figures out that there are more than a few strings attached to this particular gift. In fact, this supposed “gift” is more like a noose. And when Lucy discovers that…she loses it.
I loved getting to show some of Lucy’s dark side. The lovely Miss Fox is not at all pleasant in this scene! She’s not a well-behaved little lady like her family trained her to be. She’s just your average girl who’s about three steps from wanting to murder someone who did her wrong. As the writer (and also as someone who can relate with this typically rule-abiding character) this was really fun to depict.
What did this book teach you about writing or about yourself?
The True Born Trilogy represents the first time I’ve written a series of books. Throughout writing the series I learned an awful lot about penning a story that arcs out over three books. I almost wish I could go back and re-write the novels, knowing what I know now! Having said that, there’s something really special about crafting the last book in a series, which is what True Storm is. I wanted to leave my readers feeling fulfilled by this last installment. I wanted every reader to feel like they’d just experienced the best meal they remember having in a long time, so I spent a lot of time in the early stages plotting this one out more meticulously than the previous two. Using what I learned from writing the first two novels, True Born and True North, I wanted to make sure True Storm was strong both as a stand-alone novel as a the finale of the series.
Did I succeed? Hopefully readers will let me know!!
What do you hope readers will take away from TRUE STORM?
You know, my favorite books are those in a series where I finish one and literally cannot wait to pick up the next. My fondest hope is that readers of the True Born series feel the same way. So, first and foremost, I hope readers put down True Storm feeling like they’ve been on an exhausting, wonderful roller coaster.
But I also wrote these books with a strong message in mind. With each of the novels I’ve written, I think I’ve wanted to do the same thing: to allow readers a different kind of glimpse into some of the most pressing problems in this world, and how our relatively small problems today can lead to truly terrifying, destructive results tomorrow.
But rather than feel powerless and scared, I’d like to leave each of my readers feeling like they can make a real difference––to know that each of us can change the world. I worked hard to portray my heroine Lucy Fox in an empowered and empowering light for that reason. In the face of tragedy and upheaval, in the face of having seemingly no options, each of us can still make decisions that can turn the tide for our future and that of the world.
Was there an AHA! moment along your road to publication where something suddenly sank in and you felt you had the key to writing a novel? What was it?
I think my biggest AHA! moment is happening now, to be honest. True Storm is my fifth published novel, and the last novel in the first trilogy I’ve ever attempted to write. I know this sounds kind of funny but… it’s just starting to sink in that I’m an author who has real, live readers and people who might appreciate what I’ve put out in the world. I’m always blown away when readers or bloggers reach out and tell me they enjoyed the books or characters.
What are you working on now?
At the moment I have about four very different projects on the go. Three of these are trilogies! One project is a dystopian story about witches. Another is a straight YA novel. I’m also considering a series of books that take place in the same world as the True Born Trilogy, Dominion City, involving a few of other characters in the series. I will be truly interested to hear what readers think of this idea! I’m also working on a vampire story, because doesn’t everybody write at least one vampire novel??
