The Barber With A Will

[By Róisín Curé in Galway] The other day I received a text from my teenage son. He wanted to go to the barber's after school. I said no, because it was a beautiful day and we have few enough of those, and I didn't want to spend it at the barber's when there were weeds basking in sunshine just asking for their gloating to be curtailed and their rude health cast into a trug. Our texts went back and forth until there were so many texts just bearing the word "Please" that I gave in. Besides, there had already been many weeds cast to the wind (literally I'm afraid) that afternoon.

Paddy has great loyalty to the barber Ali, who used to work at a different shop around the corner. He's opened his new place now and is mopping up all the business that the other barbershops turned away after 4.45pm Tuesdays and Wednesdays and any time on Monday, when they closed. Ali is open 9.00am - 7.00pm and he's on his own for the moment. My son Paddy can't believe this work ethic. There were so many people waiting to have their hair cut by Ali that we ended up waiting for over two hours...during which time many weeds no doubt multiplied with abandon.

Paddy is the ghostly figure on the left, not the small lad in the chair. But see how Ali cuts hair - he is very passionate about his work and does a spectacular job. I've drawn him loads of times in his old place of employment and he is always effusive about my sketches - he crows with delight without a trace of self-consciousness. When I showed him this sketch he was delighted.
"I want that sketch!" he said, without hesitation.
I don't tear any sketches out of my sketchbook - of course not! - but I do make prints. He doesn't know it yet but he's getting a print of this. I want to show him how I appreciate how hard he works and I usually forget to leave a tip (I'm just a bit of a dusty pockets).

I hope Ali does really well and that he lives long and prospers.
