NY attorney general latest scalp in #MeToo reckoning

New York (AFP) - New York state's top prosecutor, a public defender of the #MeToo movement and antagonist of Donald Trump, has become the latest public figure to resign over allegations of sexual misconduct.
Eric Schneiderman, a 63-year-old progressive Democrat serving a second elected term as state attorney general, resigned late Monday hours after being accused of physically assaulting four women.
It was a swift fall from power for the chief law enforcement official in the state, an outspoken Trump opponent whose office had launched multiple legal challenges against the Republican administration.
"Gotcha," tweeted White House counselor to the president, Kellyanne Conway, although there was no immediate response from Trump.
"While these allegations are unrelated to my professional conduct or the operations of the office, they will effectively prevent me from leading the office’s work at this critical time," he said.
"I therefore resign my office, effective at the close of business on May 8."
Two of the women spoke to The New Yorker on the record, alleging that Schneiderman repeatedly hit them, often after drinking, frequently in bed and never with their consent.
Both say they sought medical attention after having been slapped hard across the ear and face, and also choked, the magazine said.
The article was co-written by Ronan Farrow, who last month shared the Pulitzer Prize for public service with The New York Times for reporting on the Harvey Weinstein scandal and sexual harassment.
The New Yorker said none of the women classified the behavior as consensual.
"It wasn't consensual. This wasn’t sexual playacting. This was abusive, demeaning, threatening behavior," Tanya Selvaratnam, a Harvard-educated author, actor and film producer told the magazine.
The Sri Lankan-born woman said Schneiderman, whom she dated in 2016-17, called her "his 'brown slave,'" spat at her and choked her.
"He was cutting off my ability to breathe," she said, accusing Schneiderman of drinking heavily, taking sedatives and pressing her to drink too, saying "drink your bourbon, Turnip."
"We could rarely have sex without him beating me," she said.
Schneiderman, who had positioned himself publicly as a defender of women's rights, had inserted himself into the downfall of disgraced movie mogul Weinstein, launching legal action against his former production company in February for failing to protect staff.
New York's state Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is facing a left-flank challenge for a third term from progressive "Sex and the City" actress Cynthia Nixon, was among those who demanded Schneiderman go.
- 'Damning pattern' -
"No one is above the law," he said late Monday. "Given the damning pattern of facts and corroboration laid out in the article, I do not believe it is possible for Eric Schneiderman to continue to serve."
On Tuesday, the Manhattan district attorney's office confirmed it had opened an investigation -- as ordered by Cuomo overnight -- into the allegations against Schneiderman.
Ironically, until Monday Schneiderman was the one investigating the Manhattan district attorney, also at the behest of Cuomo, for failing to prosecute Weinstein for sexual misconduct in 2015.
A spokesman confirmed that the New York police department had no complaints on file against the former attorney general.
Schneiderman initially denied assaulting anyone or ever engaging in non-consensual sex, and his office also released a statement from his ex-wife attesting to his "outstanding values."
"In the privacy of intimate relationships, I have engaged in role-playing and other consensual sexual activity," he said.
But hours later he was the latest powerful man to fall in the wake of the avalanche of sexual misconduct allegations from women that have poured forth since the Weinstein scandal broke late last year and effectively ended the Hollywood movie producer's career.
Schneiderman "has made a career railing against this type of abuse. Yet apparently he intends to victimize these courageous women who have come forward by pulling out that age-old sexist trope that they wanted it," said Debra Katz, a lawyer for another of the women.

Tim Tebow Getting Second Wind in Double-A Baseball
by WARNER TODD HUSTON

Suddenly Tim Tebow is “tearing it up” in Double-A baseball and enjoying a second wind for the season. The former NFL player made a splash when he jumped into baseball, however, this season he only earned one hit in the next 14 at-bats after homering in his first plate appearance.

But now, Tebow hit a homer on May 4 then another one the next day bringing his batting average from .133 to.241, NBC Sports reported.
“For the season, he now has 19 hits in 79 at bats. With five doubles, a triple, and three home runs, that gives Tebow a slugging percentage of .443,” Mike Florio reported.
The numbers here could make the difference between his languishing in Double-A and making the cut to advance to Triple-A in his quest to jump into the big leagues. And, according to Florio, “Tebow is now doing well enough to justify an eventual push to Triple-A ball.”
Tebow wowed fans with his fist big at bat for the Binghamton Rumble Ponies driving in two teammates with his April 5 homer against the Portland Sea Dogs at NYSEG Stadium.
The former NFL quarterback has been a huge draw nearly everywhere he goes during his effort to become a Major League Baseball player.

In Ohio’s Trump Country, A Working-Class Millennial Mother Leads the ‘America First’ Movement
by JOHN BINDER

NORTH CANTON, Ohio — It’s the day before the Ohio Republican primary in the 16th Congressional District, a region that is the quintessential “Trump Country” of the nation: Blue-collar folks who are fed up with being put last by their public servants.
The day before, 29-year-old Christina Hagan (who is pregnant with twins) and her flock of young staffers ran home to the suburbs of Purma, Ohio talking to voters the old-fashioned way. Hours before door-knocking, Christina and her staff waved and passed out candy in a local Polish-American pride parade.
“A lot of people were clapping for us and telling us they were voting for Christina,” one of the staffers told me. “We only got one middle finger,” the staffer joked.
Though the “America First” movement is often described by the media establishment as driven by male energy. In northeast Ohio, that is certainly not the case.
Christina is a young millennial mother who had her first child while in the State House of Representatives in Ohio. She worked as a waitress at a local Italian restaurant to pay off her student loan debt while she was pregnant with her first child and in the state legislature.
She is the daughter of the anti-establishment, economic nationalist movement looking to drive the GOP establishment out of work.
“When I first brought my daughter to Columbus with me, they treated me terribly,” Christina told me about the party establishment that has been fighting her since she entered public office.
A photo taken by a local Ohio photographer captured the essence of Christina Hagan perfectly, depicting her among a sea of men with a child in her arms, doing what the establishment Republican party said she could never do.

Most of the time, she’s the only woman in the room. Her gaggle of staff are young, handsome, and committed to the America First agenda – three traits that are hardly seen in political campaigns.
Then again, this is Trump country, where the push for less immigration, an end to job-killing free trade deals, protection of the American citizen, and getting U.S. troops out of foreign wars lead the fight. It’s America First all the way, all the time – a motto that’s uncommon in the halls of Washington, D.C.
“The average person connects extremely well with me,” Christina says. “Most Republicans, Democrats, and Independents are blue-collar people who believe in this agenda.”
Indeed, GOP voters do believe in that agenda and the passion for putting Americans first is as potent today in Ohio as it was in Trump’s 2016 presidential election.
Christina’s biggest campaign asset is a green-eyed, 19-year-old University of Akron, Ohio student named Brian. Two years ago, Christina came to his high school (also her alma mater) and spoke to his class about state government.
A week after graduating, Brian went to work for Christina in the Ohio state House.
“I connected with everything that she was saying,” Brian told me about the first time he met Christina in his classroom.
“Just the fact that she was where we were from,” he said. “This is a white-collar world and we’re blue-collar people. She came from the same high school as me and grew up in the same area as me. For that reason, I knew this was a calling.”
The enthusiasm around Christina is not confined to her personal staff of admirers.
A local Tea Party activist and Trump supporter, Charlie Giunta, recently showed his support for Christina and her America First policy agenda by waving an American flag next to a “Hagan for Congress” sign off a local bridge above a busy interstate.
There are thousands of more voters like Charlie.

While Christina’s supporters are as excited about her as they are about Trump, the corporate donors and GOP establishment are spending more than a million dollars to stop her from making it to Congress.
Last week, Breitbart News noted how the Chamber of Commerce recently dropped $300,000 into the race to defeat Christina and support her Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL)-backed opponent, Anthony Gonzalez, who says he has a “man crush” on “Never Trump” leader Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE). Gonzalez moved to the 16th District to run for the congressional seat after living in California.
“I’ll never forget the day when some of the big donors announced they were supporting Anthony Gonzalez, who had just flown home from San Francisco,” Christina says of her complete rejection by the corporate lobby and GOP elite.
“I cried, not the tears of emotion, but the tears of fury,” she says. “I just remember thinking, standing over the sink, saying to myself how the establishment party doesn’t care at all about the people that we serve.”
Christina says she was freshly reassured by a voter, who solidified why she is fighting on behalf of the America First movement.
“One voter said, ‘I don’t think the party has given you a fair shake,'” she says. “When one person like that sees that you’re a fighter even through all the dark money, it’s very powerful.”
Since Trump’s victory, there have been many Republicans who have attempted to paint themselves as America First candidates despite their record of Paul Ryan Republicanism.
Take establishment Republican Ed Gillespie, who ran for Virginia governor last year and lost to his Democrat opponent, Ralph Northam. Gillespie claimed to support Trump’s agenda, but only hinted at that support with a campaign ad opposing sanctuary cities for illegal aliens. In the end, the voters did not buy it.
Christina says she’s had to put up with that same phoniness in her own congressional race, mentioning how when Trump came to Ohio a few days ago, the crew of Never Trumpers who fought his candidacy were suddenly vying for front row seats to hear him speak.
“Those same people push to the front of the room to see him in Ohio when they worked so hard to try to defeat him,” Christina says of the party establishment.
If there’s a resounding theme about Christina’s campaign for Congress, it’s that she wants voters to send a message to the GOP establishment that young-blooded America First candidates will not be stopped in their effort to defend citizens at all costs against a well-connected elite who realize that they’ve forgotten the working and middle class of America and simply don’t care. Her staff repeats this theme in conversations as well.
“Tomorrow is every American getting to stand against the establishment that’s taken control of our lives,” Christina told me before jumping in a van to continue door-knocking for votes. “We’re going to Washington and they’re going to have to deal with the voice of the American people.”

Fox News’s Jesse Watters: Mueller Is ‘Basically’ the Democrats’ 2020 Presidential Nominee

Fox News host Jesse Watters said Friday that special counsel Robert Mueller is “basically” the Democrats’ nominee for the 2020 presidential election.

Watters, who filled in for Laura Ingraham on Friday’s broadcast of The Ingraham Angle on Fox News, said Mueller’s Russia probe is the only thing that could hinder President Trump’s re-election prospects in 2020.
“It seems like Mueller’s basically the Democrat candidate for president,” Watters said. “He’s the only person that can stop Donald Trump’s reelection. And the Democrats are putting all their eggs in the Mueller basket and if he clears everybody else after this, they have nothing.”
The Fox News host also took aim at Democrats for defending Mueller’s investigation in light of allegations that some investigators on Mueller’s team displayed anti-Trump biases.
“I don’t think there’s anything wrong with criticizing the Mueller investigation if something’s wrong,” he said. “Evidence of blatant anti-Trump bias by investigators isn’t justification for questioning the probe? You kidding me?”
Watters stated on his own show last Saturday that the anti-Trump texts between Peter Strzok and another agent could be the sign of a “coup” within Mueller’s investigation to remove Trump from office.
The FBI booted Strzok and the other agent from the probe after discovering the anti-Trump texts, causing many to question the integrity of Mueller’s investigation.
