A Day ‘Well’ Spent - Sketching Around Satara
The urban sketchers of Pune meet every Sunday morning and 150 such meets were done. It was a milestone which the group decided to mark with a trip to Satara, some 100km away from Pune.
The city of Satara itself has a history to itself but we were in the mood to get away from the city and so landed up bang in the middle of farmlands within which lay a hidden gem of a structure.![]() |
Bara Motechi Vihir A Stepped Well At Limb Village Near Satara |
‘Bara Motechi Vihir’ meaning a well with twelve pulley mechanisms to pull water is an ancient stepped well located at Limb village near Satara. There is no particular structure that is visible above the ground but climbing down the steps leads to a fantastic 110 feet deep well. Unlike the other step wells in other parts of India this one has steps only on one side which form the outer portion of the well. At the end of the steps is a viewing gallery which overlooks the well. The well is more than 50 feet in diameter.
Sketching such a complicated structure was a challenge. There weren't enough vantage points from where I could capture all the facets of the well. So I decided to do a vertical cross section sketch of the well from the top to the water level with the viewing gallery in the middle. I used two sheets of paper together and was quite happy with the result.
Latter part of the day was spent at the confluence of two rivers Krishna and Venna. This place dotted with temples of Shiva is called ‘Sangam Mahuli’ and on the other side of the Krishna river is called ‘Kshetra Mahuli’. The fascinating Kashi Vishweshwar temple is built in basalt stone and is a great specimen of Hemadpanth style of architecture.
Across the river is the Rameshwar temple. I was told that the temple has been carved out of a monolith. It is not as big as the Vishweshwar temple but is located at a higher level. There are around 50-60 steps to climb to the temple which on that day were being used to dry the quilts that were washed in the river water. The colourful spread all over the steps was an interesting sight.
This whole area surrounding the rivers is place of pilgrimage and also known as ‘Dakshin Kashi’ with many small temples all around. From where I stood sketching, I could view couple of smaller temples in the distance, peeking through the lush greenery. It was an beautiful scenic view which made this a day which started at a well, end really well.
