At Puri's Jagannath Cart Festival

[Guest post by Kush Boradia in Puri, India] I had travelled from Mumbai to Puri, Orissa, in eastern India, to see the fabulous art and culture of this small city. My visit coincided with the annual Jagannath Cart Festival. My arrival was a memorable one. When I got down from my car on the famous Grand Road of Puri it was filled with an ocean of people. The magnificent Hindu festival lures around 10 lakh (one million) people into this city. The first sketch I made (above) was here, sitting in the middle of a sea of people.

As I walked down the Grand Road I finally came upon the Jagannath Temple. It is a massive structure with the height of the tallest dome being above 65 metres. Three main domes and 108 smaller domed temples were inside the temple area. Intricate stone carvings depicting different stories lay all over the beautiful temple. The temple covers an area of about 38,000 sq metres, and is more than 500 years old. Inside this temple is where the deities of God Jagannath lie. I decided to make a traditional pencil sketch of this structure to give justice to this historic monument.

As I was touring around the temple I saw the beautiful culture of the state of Orissa, where Puri is located. I witnessed a group of dancers performing the Odissi Dance on stage in front of the temple. Boys and girls together wearing their traditional attire danced to hymns and melodious prayers. It was truly a sight to behold. The city of Puri and its artistic vibrance inspired me to make this series about the Jagannath Temple.
