Erin Bowman, author of CONTAGION, on being inspired by a nightmare

We're thrilled to have Erin Bowman stop by to tell us more about her latest novel, CONTAGION.

Erin, what was your inspiration for writing CONTAGION?

CONTAGION is the first book I've ever written that was inspired by a dream. (Well, less of a dream and more of a nightmare.) In this nightmare, I was part of a crew that had landed on a deserted planet. Our mechanic was locked in our medbay because he was...not himself. I watched him claw the skin off his face before waking up. Once awake, I feverishly typed some notes into my phone so I could return to the idea later.

What book or books would most resonate with readers who love your book--or visa versa?

I think CONTAGION would be a great fit for fans of The Illuminae Files.

How long did you work on CONTAGION?

I started playing with a kernel of an idea that would eventually become CONTAGION back in 2012, after my dream/nightmare about the mechanic in the medbay. It took me ages to find the actual story, though, and the manuscript didn't begin to resemble the published story until about 2015. The bulk of writing/revising for CONTAGION happened between 2015-2017.

What did this book teach you about writing or about yourself?

This book taught me how to write tension. I've always prided myself on writing page-turners, but CONTAGION is equal parts thriller and horror, and I hadn't published in that genre before. Creating mystery early, slowly peeling back layers to reveal a terrifying truth, and seeding clues to create tension and anticipation for the reader were all skills that I had to hone while working on this novel.

What are you working on now?

I'm currently putting the final touches on the sequel to CONTAGION, which should be out summer 2019. And when I have time, I'm playing around with a new novel idea that I'm extremely excited about. It has pieces of everything I've published so far—western elements, a dash of dystopia and sci-fi, tons of morally gray characters, a setting so rich it's practically a character... I hope it can become a real book some day so you can read it. :)
