US-Canada NAFTA talks break up without deal, as leak upends negotiations
Adam Shaw/Fox News
Leaked Trump remarks could upend trade talks with Canada
President Trump told reporters off-the-record that he didn't plan to compromise
“The USTR team will meet with Minister Freeland and her colleagues Wednesday of next week,” Lighthizer said.
During a press availability Friday afternoon at the Canadian embassy in Washington, Freeland said, "We have made good progress but there is still work to be done."
Trump has been trying to negotiate a new NAFTA with both Mexico and Canada. The president announced Monday that he has secured a tentative deal with Mexico but said “we’ll see” if Canada can be part of the new agreement. The administration had set a deadline of Friday for a deal with Canada.
While the talks have not succeeded, the Trump administration on Friday sent a formal notification to Congress about its agreement with Mexico, saying Canada can join later if they reach a deal.
Talks between the United States and Canada over the North American Free Trade Agreement broke up Friday without a deal, after a leak of off-record comments by President Trump roiled the high-wire negotiations.
Still, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said in a statement Friday that officials will continue to work with Canada’s foreign affairs minister, Chrystia Freeland, and others next week to strike a deal.
NAFTA TALKS ROCKED BY MEDIA LEAK OF OFF-RECORD TRUMP COMMENTS
“I have notified the Congress of my intention to enter into a trade agreement with Mexico -- and with Canada if it is willing, in a timely manner, to meet the high standards for free, fair, and reciprocal trade contained therein,” Trump said.
The talks were rocked Friday as The Toronto Star reported that it obtained comments from an off-the-record portion of an Oval Office interview between Trump and Bloomberg News. In those remarks, Trump said he isn’t making compromises with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government, but isn’t going to say so publicly because “it’s going to be so insulting they’re not going to be able to make a deal.”
“Here’s the problem. If I say no, the answer’s no. If I say no, then you’re going to put that, and it’s going to be so insulting they’re not going to be able to make a deal ... I can’t kill these people,” he said of Trudeau’s government.
In another remark he did not want published, Trump said the deal would be “totally on our terms” and reportedly suggested he had tried to spook the Canadians with the threat of auto tariffs.
After the article was published, Trump slammed the media via Twitter for "BLATANTLY" violating the interview terms, while seeking to assure Canada.
"Wow, I made OFF THE RECORD COMMENTS to Bloomberg concerning Canada, and this powerful understanding was BLATANTLY VIOLATED. Oh well, just more dishonest reporting. I am used to it. At least Canada knows where I stand!" he tweeted.
On the record, Trump had told Bloomberg that a deal was “close."
"I think Canada’s going to make a deal at some point. It may be by Friday, or it may be within a period of time. But ultimately they have no choice," he said.
But then, according to The Star, he also reportedly said, “Off the record: totally on our terms. Totally.”
The comments have since made their way to Trudeau's government, causing problems for the talks.
The Star reported that they asked his administration about the remarks right before a critical meeting Friday. Further, the Star reported that Trudeau's team "saw them as confirmation of its suspicions that Trump’s team has not been truly planning to compromise" -- and raised the quotes to American negotiators at the beginning of Friday's meeting.
Asked for comment earlier Friday, the Canadian government referred to statements made by Trudeau, who said, "We will only sign a deal if it is a good deal for Canada. Again, no deal is better than a bad deal for Canada and for Canadians and that’s exactly what we are remaining firm on."
It's unclear how the Star even obtained the off-record comments. The article said they were obtained by a "source," and Bloomberg's editor-in-chief did not dispute them.
A Bloomberg spokesman told Fox News: "When we agree that something is off the record, we respect that."
Daniel Dale, The Star reporter whose name was on the article, said that the Canadian side was “complaining to me about the Trump team showing no flexibility even before I asked them for comment this morning on the Trump quotes.”
“They see the quotes as confirmation of suspicions that the Trump team isn't working to make a win-win deal today,” he tweeted.
In August, Trump threatened Canada with auto tariffs if the U.S. and Canada can't forge a deal.
"Canada must wait," Trump tweeted. "Their Tariffs and Trade Barriers are far too high. Will tax cars if we can't make a deal!"
Trump has been a critic of NAFTA for decades and during his presidential campaign described it as “the worst trade deal maybe ever signed anywhere.”

Pope Francis: Resign, and Let Pope Benedict Return from Retirement
Richard A. Viguerie and Mark Fitzgibbons
The sex abuse scandal and its cover-up within the Catholic Church require solutions that the institutional Church will be incapable of achieving on its own.
But the more serious problem is that since Vatican II the Church has been AWOL on Biblically based Christian moral issues affecting the core family and its relationship to God. From marriage, divorce, same-sex relations, sex outside marriage, and the love respect between men and women according to God’s laws, the Church has abandoned its role of moral teacher and spiritual guide telling people where the ‘guardrails’ are.
The Church’s abandonment of focus on the central and natural institution of the family has been accentuated by Pope Francis’ attention to socialist, earthly issues. His progressive politics-over-family approach is a symptom of the larger problems within the Church and its hierarchy.
No institution that is sick can cure itself, and the Catholic Church is grievously ill. Like any patient, the institutional Church must be a willing participant in the cure. But it will be up to the Catholic laity to administer the necessary fixes.
We join others who have already made the call for Pope Francis to resign, and ask you to do the same by clicking and signing this petition, (http://www.conservativehq.com/article/28656-sign-petition) which will be widely circulated to thousands of Catholic leaders including clergy, laity, and the media.
While the Pope’s failures have been many, the flashpoint may be that he chose to ignore the warning issued by Apostolic Nuncio Carlo Maria Viganò about the pattern of sexual abuse under Archbishop McCarrick of Washington, D.C. Pope Benedict had demoted McCarrick. Ignoring the warning, Pope Francis chose to promote and insulate McCarrick, leaving the inescapable conclusion that the current Pope’s resignation is the only acceptable beginning of both the legal and spiritual remedies.
The bigger picture, however, is that the Church needs a change that will exert energy about God’s law and the core, natural human institution, the family. Pope Francis is compromised, and does not have the credibility to lead in this reform and transition.
Like a past, strong, and credible CEO coming out of retirement to salvage the reputation of the entity, Pope Benedict is the natural replacement for Pope Francis during a period of transition.
Changing the head of the Catholic Church is far from the only steps that need to be taken. If the remedy is left to the current hierarchy within the Church, no credible, meaningful, and lasting reforms will be undertaken or, if enacted, won’t succeed. The “deep state,” so to speak, within the Catholic Church is insulated and will fight to preserve itself at the expense of curing the homosexual sex abuse that has incubated within the Church under the current hierarchy.
Reform led by the Catholic laity -- those who do not have vested interests in preserving the rot that has infected the Church -- is what’s needed. Investigations must be instituted under the supervision and with the participation of serious Catholics who are not part of the institutional hierarchy. Outsiders need to check the temptations of insiders to manipulate the findings.
This is not a call to “democratize” the Catholic Church. Like other large institutions whose beneficent missions have been corrupted, the problem is not with the mission, but the frailty of human character within the leadership, or at least parts of the leadership.
When institutions violate the internal laws that govern their operations, the concept of “visitation” may be used to cure those errors. Historically, the Pope was the “visitor” with the authority to fix any internal malfunctions of the Church. Given that Pope Francis has conflicts that preclude him from acting as a credible visitor, he must step down.
Pope Benedict, as a replacement “CEO,” should appoint committees led by laity members of the Church for this exercise in visitation. This visitation must include detailed investigations to determine the real causes of the sex-abuse scandals, from which reforms may be instituted to save the Church.
But we the laity of the Catholic Church must provide the leadership in calls for such action, otherwise the “deep state” within the Catholic Church, with its incentives to cover-up the sex abuse scandal, will proceed unchecked. We must make those calls in petitions, with communications with our parish priests, writing op/eds, using social media, etc.
There are models for this form of leadership in the face of institutionalized corruption of a mission. In 1976, Ronald Reagan was running against the Ford-Rockefeller wing of the Republican Party. He said we needed new leadership -- leadership unfettered by old ties and old relationships.
As with so many things in life, we who are part of institutions that are supposed to operate for greater purposes must be the leaders to preserve the integrity of those institutions. Therefore please consider signing this petition for Pope Francis to resign, and for Pope Benedict to come out of retirement. And please forward the petition to all Catholics you know – family, friends, fellow parishioners.
The Party Of Free Stuff And Illegal Aliens Is Not The Workingman’s Friend
George Rasley, CHQ Editor

Democrats once passed themselves off as the party of the working guy; pro-union, pro-American manufacturing, pro-infrastructure and anti-communist, but today’s Democratic Party looks nothing like the party of Franklin Delano Roosevelt or John F. Kennedy.
In the age of Donald Trump Democrats have become, not the party of the American working man, but the party of free stuff and illegal aliens.
Leading Democrats, such as Senators Kirsten Gillibrand of New York and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and New York Mayor Bill de Blasio have called for the abolition of the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency – which would in effect open America’s borders to the entire world.
Socialist Senator Bernie Sanders has long-advocated debt-free college and the Democrats’ marquee congressional candidate, New York Democratic-Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has made free college and Medicare for all hallmarks of her campaign.
Just this week the Democratic Party in Florida nominated Far Left Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum for Governor.
Gillum, an outspokenly progressive African-American, is the candidate of Socialist Senator Bernie Sanders and Far-Left billionaire Tom Steyer, founder of the “Need to Impeach” super PAC.
According to reporting by The New Yorker’s Benjamin Wallace-Wells, Gillum’s campaign platform calls for a steep corporate-tax increase to pay for a billion-dollar boost in public-education spending, a repeal of Florida’s Stand Your Ground law, Medicare for all, and a fifteen-dollar-an-hour minimum wage, abolishment of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the impeachment of the President.
On the national level Democrats have put stopping “climate change” ahead of jobs for coal miners – once the bedrock of the Democratic Party in West Virginia, Pennsylvania and elsewhere.
And they’ve joined “Not In My Backyard” wealthy urban elites and back-to-nature whackos in campaigning against the Keystone XL pipeline and other infrastructure projects that would bring thousands of jobs to people working in the welding, construction, pipeline operations and other trades.
Perhaps worst of all, Democrats have become the party of the illegal aliens and unlimited immigration that has suppressed the wages and destroyed the quality of life for millions of America’s working families.
As Karen Zeigler and Steven A. Camarota of the Center for Immigration Studies noted in a 2015 paper, “Government data show that since 2000 all of the net gain in the number of working-age (16 to 65) people holding a job has gone to immigrants (legal and illegal).”
This is remarkable, concluded Zeigler and Camarota, “given that native-born Americans accounted for two-thirds of the growth in the total working-age population.”
Now here’s the key takeaway from Zeigler and Camarota’s study: “Though there has been some recovery from the Great Recession, there were still fewer working-age natives holding a job in the first quarter of 2014 than in 2000, while the number of immigrants with a job was 5.7 million above the 2000 level.” (Emphasis ours)
According to research by Forbes contributor Chuck Jones, in the first half of this year, there have been 174,000 manufacturing jobs added to the US economy. This is almost as many as any full year over the past decade and should easily surpass any added during Obama’s administration as the economy recovered from the Great Recession.
CNBC analyzed the cumulative job growth in each industry since the president's November 2016 election to help gauge which industries are growing at the fastest pace.
At the top of the list, jobs in the mining and logging industry are up 13.5 percent since the election, well above the gains in construction and transportation, which made second and third place, respectively. Job growth in oil and gas extraction — which are included in the category — typically provide a boost to the headline number.
In the No. 2 spot, the construction industry is one of the hottest in the American economy in terms of employment and has been explicitly cited by the Bureau of Labor Statistics as an area of better-than-average growth.
Jobs in the trucking industry have climbed 4.6 percent since Trump's election.
This Labor Day, as TV commentators and newspaper editors cast about for heroes of the American labor movement to honor they should forget Samuel Gompers (the first and longest-serving president of the American Federation of Labor) John L. Lewis (early leader of the United Mine Workers and a founder of the Congress of Industrial Organizations) Walter Reuther (United Autoworkers President and leading liberal Democrat of the post-WWII era) or Eugene V. Debs (labor leader and Socialist candidate for President) and honor President Donald J. Trump for putting Americans back to work.
Root: Trump Just Got Mexico To Pay for the Wall and They Didn’t Even Notice
Are you tired of winning yet? It’s a common refrain seen on social media every time President Donald Trump keeps a campaign promise. But critics have plagued him with skepticism about being able to keep one of his biggest promises: building the southern border wall, and at Mexico’s expense.
Donald Trump says he will make Mexico pay for wall https://t.co/hlGRHvxytI via @YouTube – #NeverForget
— Sandy (@dustysandyroads) August 30, 2018
But now it seems said critics may have to eat crow. According to conservative radio talk show host Wayne Allyn Root, Trump just kept that very promise and America is winning, yet again.
“That was all before President Trump announced a United States-Mexico trade agreement. Because Trump talked tough and never gave in, US workers will benefit,” he wrote. “US carmakers will benefit. US manufacturers will benefit. US taxpayers will benefit. Trump did it. He won. We all won.”
“Trump announced he will terminate NAFTA,” he continued. “While we don’t know all the details yet, I guarantee this new trade deal will save us tens of billions, perhaps hundreds of billions of dollars over the next decade.”
“Since the wall with Mexico costs about $25 billion, Trump just forced Mexico (whether they know it, or not) to pay for the wall. Once again, Trump accomplished what establishment politicians of both parties said could never be done.”
According to The Hill, during a “meeting with FIFA and U.S. Soccer officials about the 2026 men’s World Cup,” Trump was asked about about the border wall. Trump’s response was that “the wall will be paid for very easily by Mexico. It will ultimately be paid for by Mexico.”
Following this statement, the Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs Luis Videgaray Caso took to Twitter to express, again, that Mexico will not pay for the wall.
We just reached a trade understanding with the US, and the outlook for the relationship between our two countries is very positive. We will NEVER pay for a wall, however. That has been absolutely clear from the very beginning.
— Luis Videgaray Caso (@LVidegaray) August 28, 2018
This, however, does not take into consideration the explanation Root outlined for how they actually will, knowingly or not, pay for the wall, via the trade deal.
The establishment media has been rife headlines proclaiming that, “No, Mexico won’t pay for the wall, no matter what Trump says” rhetoric.
Even on social media, his critics are disputing his claim.
But, as with Caso, none have looked at the simple math of the deal the way Root did.
Interestingly, on Twitter, Trump has not yet been taking a victory lap regarding the wall. He’s been hit hard for months about the wall promise but his tweets focused on other benefits of the trade deal with Mexico.
He began with high praise for all involved in making the deal happen:
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 27, 2018
He has also discussed how the deal will benefit our economy. Farmers and jobs have been big topics for Trump, even before this deal:
Our new Trade Deal with Mexico focuses on FARMERS, GROWTH for our country, tearing down TRADE BARRIERS, JOBS and having companies continue to POUR BACK INTO OUR COUNTRY. It will be a big hit!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 29, 2018
Root pointed out that Trump is taking a page from Rush Limbaugh’s book with a “Don’t doubt me” standard.
He wrote: “(W)ith Donald J. Trump there are no such words as ‘never’ or ‘impossible.’ Trump has chutzpah. Trump has cajones. Trump aims for the moon. Trump is combative and aggressive. Trump is driven to do what others say cannot be done. Trump is an eternal optimist. He accepts nothing
It is this, perhaps, that plays a big role in Trump’s popularity with his supporters and one-time doubters, alike. Not only has he been keeping his promises, but he tirelessly fights the good fight for America, regardless of what his critics say.
South Carolina Gov Slams Judge Who Blocked Planned Parenthood Defunding: “Abortion is What PP Does”

South Carolina Gov Slams Judge Who Blocked Planned Parenthood Defunding: “Abortion is What PP Does”
South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster is not giving up on his promise to protect his state taxpayers from funding the largest abortion group in America, Planned Parenthood.
On Thursday, McMaster said he plans to contest a judge’s ruling blocking his efforts, WCNC News reports.
“My position is the taxpayers of South Carolina who do not support the promotion of abortion should not have to support with their tax money the promotion of abortion, and that’s what Planned Parenthood does any way you look at it,” McMaster told reporters.
In July, McMaster took a bold stance against the abortion industry by vetoing a health care spending bill that included tax dollars for Planned Parenthood. A week later, he followed up by issuing an executive order instructing the state Department of Health and Human Services to “terminate abortion clinics as Medicaid providers,” according to the local news.
Earlier this week, U.S. District Judge Mary Geiger Lewis issued a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction blocking the state from cutting off Planned Parenthood from the Medicaid program.
Responding to the ruling Thursday, the governor said he will not back down on his promise. He said he plans to continue pursuing a waiver from the federal government to allow South Carolina to defund the abortion chain.
“We hope to win that point and I have finished the paperwork,” he said. “It took a while to get an exemption from the federal government rules.”
The governor’s spokesperson Brian Symmes echoed the governor’s words Tuesday after the judge’s ruling.
“[McMaster] will continue to fight until every South Carolinian can know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that their taxpayer dollars are not being used to perform abortions,” Symmes said. “… he will continue to do all that he can to make sure no taxpayer dollars either directly or indirectly subsidize abortions in South Carolina.”
In the past several years, the Republican governor and legislature have cut various streams of funding to the abortion chain, but Planned Parenthoods in the state still received $82,000 in Medicaid funds in 2017, according to local news reports.
Earlier in August, attorneys for the state defended the cuts, arguing that Planned Parenthood serves a “remarkably low” number of Medicaid patients. According to the abortion group’s own statements, its South Carolina facilities see fewer than 300 Medicaid patients a year.
Last year, McMaster instructed the state Department of Health and Human Services to request a waiver from the federal government to defund abortion groups of Medicaid dollars. That waver has not yet been granted, but McMaster said he will not back down.
In May, he described Planned Parenthood as a “blemish on the great character of the people of South Carolina and this country.”
The governor continued: “I’m going to do all I can do to see they get no taxpayer money. I can accomplish that. And I will, along with President Trump.”
Three years ago, state officials discovered that all three abortion clinics in South Carolina violated multiple state laws and regulations, including the improper disposal of aborted babies’ bodies, LifeNews reported. The abortion clinics, along with two waste disposal companies, faced fines of up to $51,000 for dumping aborted babies’ bodies into a public landfill, according to the state Department of Health and Environmental Control.
Planned Parenthood aborts approximately 320,000 unborn babies every year, more than any other group in the United States. Its most recent annual report showed a record income of $1.46 billion, with about half a billion dollars coming from taxpayers.
In December, the U.S. Department of Justice said it is investigating whether the Planned Parenthood abortion chain illegally sold aborted baby body parts.
Bombshell: John Brennan’s Disturbing Connection To 9/11 Will Forever Convince You
-
Smoke pours from the twin towers of the World Trade Center after they were hit by two hijacked airliners in a terrorist attack, Sept. 11, 2001, in New York. Nearly 3,000 people were killed after two hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center, one into the Pentagon in Arlington, Va., and one in Shanksville, Pa.
-
(TeaParty.org) – You probably don’t need to be told that John Brennan is a very dirty player in Washington. Everyone in the Obama administration was.
But is it possible that by revoking his security clearance, Trump also may have done far more than simply protect his administration from someone who may have been working with the deep state to overthrow his administration…but someone who has actively been plotting against the US for years?
Obama, Clinton, Kerry, Jarrett…far too many people in the previous administration had highly troubling ties to the terrorist state of Iran and in Obama’s case, there is quite a bit of evidence pointing to the fact that he was a Muslim, a fact which remained in question throughout the entirety of his presidency and he did little to dispel by always referring to the Koran as “The Holy Koran” and the Bible simply as “the Bible.”
However, while it is well-known Obama was (well, supposedly) born to a Muslim father, it has also been rumored that Brennan was a Muslim convert.
“John Brennan was Chief of the CIA station in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia at the time 9-11 hijackers had their visas approved. And it is alleged that he gave the final approval.”
On September 18, 2014, on the Ground Zero radio program, a whistle blower named Greg Ford of the 223rd Military Intelligence Battalion claimed that Brennan, as chief of the CIA station in Jeda [sic], overrode concerns and ordered that the visas of the 19 plane-hijackers be stamped. At 1:32:47 into the interview, Ford talked about ISIS and how it was created. Someone called in with a question about 9/11. Ford said:
“All 19 high jackers? Where did they get their visas stamped before they came to this country to launch 9/11? They got their visas stamped in the CIA station in Jeda [sic]. And the second in command said ‘No way, absolutely we are not going to stamp those visas.’ And the fellow who was in charge, his name was John Brennan. He was the person who overrode those concerns and cautions and ordered those visas stamped in Jeda [sic].”
“Michael Springmann was the head of the visa bureau in Saudi Arabia at the time those visas, and numerous other questionable visas, were stamped.” Freedom Outpost continues. “In this interview, Springmann recounts the time when his decisions were consistently overruled and many highly questionable visas were being issued, against his recommendations.”
And from National Review, we already know that each of the hijacker’s visas were incorrectly completed:
All 19 of the hijacker applications were incomplete in some way, with data fields left blank and questions not fully answered. Every application should have been round-filed. Yet U.S. officials approved 22 of the 23 hijacker visa applications. Of the 15 Saudis, four got their visas after the creation of the Visa Express Program in June 2001. Eight other conspirators tried to get visas during the course of the plot. Three succeeded, including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the mastermind of 9/11.
Each of these men’s visas should have been rejected. Instead, they traveled to the US were they orchestrated an event that led to the death of nearly 3,000 people, the largest number of Americans killed in a single incident since Pearl Harbor.
There is a very good argument to be made that not only did this happen on Brennan’s watch, but that if he had actually done his job correctly, 9/11 never would have happened.
And the left is trying to convince us it was petty of Trump to revoke Brennan’s security clearance.
G’ day…Ciao…
